Review: Skinfood Aloe Sun BB Cream SPF 20 PA+

As requested by reader Acsmvtak, this is a review for Skinfood’s Aloe Sun BB Cream. My apologies for the delay of the BB cream. I thought I’d use it for a few weeks before I could give a proper review.

Skinfood Aloe Sun BB Cream 1

Description:

A skin-care and make-up in one, this cream leaves your skin feeling moisturized while it corrects your skin tone. Your complexion looks naturally air-brushed, clear and fresh! Rich with aloe, it excellently soothes skin and provides moisture. Also contains SPF 20! You can apply as a foundation or as a base before your foundation.

Skinfood Aloe Sun BB Cream 2

One thing about the Skinfood’s BB cream though – it’s thick. And I mean, really thick. The texture makes it more like thick, goopy foundation than tinted moisturiser. In fact, it’s thicker than most liquid foundations I know. It spreads all right, but personally, I’d prefer it to be lighter in texture. As the relative humidity in Australia is low, it feels all right on my skin. Kinda makes me wonder how heavy this would feel if I were in hot and humid countries like Malaysia. It did not mention that this product is oil-free, but it did not leave a sticky feeling on my face or give me an oily T-zone, which was good.

Skinfood Aloe Sun BB Cream Spout

In terms of coverage, this definitely gives heavier coverage compared to The Face Shop’s Quick and Clean BB cream. As the cream was rather thick, it covered my blemishes and freckles pretty well.

Skinfood Aloe Sun BB Cream Description

It’s unfortunate that the product ingredients on the tube are written in Korean, thus I have no idea what’s in this BB cream. From the smell of it, I can tell that it has fragrance. This is a negative point for me, as I prefer my skincare and makeup products to be as fragrance-free as possible.

Skinfood Aloe Sun BB Cream Swatch

If I’m not mistaken, there’s only one shade to this BB cream, which is not unusual as all BB creams go. Again, I’d prefer if there were more shades as to cater to everyone. (Update: According to reader Willowhippo, this BB cream comes in 2 shades. The first one has yellow undertones, whereas the second has reddish undertones, which is darker)

A plus point to this product it that it has an SPF of 20. With The Face Shop’s BB cream, I’d have to apply sunscreen prior to the cream, whereas I can skip that step with the Skinfood’s. Good for my lazy days πŸ™‚

In comparison to The Face Shop’s Quick and Clean BB Cream,

The Face Shop and Skinfood BB Cream Comparison

So, did I like this BB cream? Hmmm yes and no. It works as a foundation with sunscreen, and I’m all right with that. But I don’t like that it is scented and the texture’s just a tad too heavy for my liking. Sadly, it is not something I’d repurchase.

Skinfood’s Aloe Sun BB Cream is available at Skinfood stores at RM54.90, or SGD38.

What I like about it: Provides good coverage to the skin; decent SPF.

What I did not like about it: Texture is too thick for my liking, and it is scented.

heyyy…thanks for the great review on BB creams.
by the way, u mentioned Elianto BB cream…its supposed to be TheFaceShop Quick & Clean BB cream right? πŸ™‚

From your TheFaceShop BB cream post u posted here http://www.beautyholicsanonymous.com/2008/10/review-the-face-shop-quick-and-clean-oil-free-blemish-balm/ I actually went and get it the day after i read your post. Because i have really deep acne scars, therefore the light coverage that TheFaceShop BB cream gives doesnt cover my scars at all. And when i apply more to cover it, the color end up to be ashy on me.

So after reading your review on the Skin Food, I guess i will give this one a try since its thick and i need a heavier coverage. Dang, if only you are in Malaysia…we could swap our BB creams.

Anyone in Malaysia wants to get this TheFaceShop Quick & Clear BB cream off from me?

  2. willowhippo

actually the bb cream comes in 2 shades… 1 has a yellow undertone to it, while 2 has a reddish undertone to it… if you’re darker, go for 2. but here’s an aye for more colour range!! contrary to what u said, i loved the smell!! prior to buying it, i used to just go into skinfood, pretend to try it on, and just smell the back of my hand the whole day wtf.

it’s kinda thick but i read somewhere to squeeze out a pea-size ball and rub it between your fingertips to warm it up before dabbing it on your face… it works for me!

sadly though, i think it might not be for me, because when i have it on, it stings my eyes a little, even though i put none around my eye socket area.

  3. fashionasia

hmm….i think i like my bbcreams to be thicker cos i get to skip foundation alltogether. πŸ™‚ i kinda grow to like my skinfood bbcream alot. Oh, and as compared to many other bbcreams(thefaceshop, missha), skinfood is the only one that have 2 shades to choose from. And the darker shade (#2)is pretty natural.

  4. Irenelim

Sounds good. I like the heavy coverage so that it can cover up any blemishes and freckles. πŸ™‚

  5. MisSmall

Ooo…that does look pretty thick huh? Was it hard to blend? Maybe it could be improvised as a concealer instead? πŸ˜€

  6. Tine

    Acsmvtak:
Gosh, what was I thinking?! Thanks for the heads up! I’ve already amended the post. Brains have turned to mush. Tsk tsk.

Aww shucks, I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. Perhaps the one from Skinfood might help. Too bad I don’t live in M’sia, or else I’d swap with you πŸ™‚

    Willowhippo:
Oh it does? Aww man, the shop that I went to only had one shade! Or that’s what the sales assistant told me. Bugger.
The smell is nice, that I’d give you. It’s just my thing for preferring fragrance-free products πŸ™‚
Oh dear, if it stings your eyes, better stop using it. Weird though, since it’s not even in your eyes. Hmmm …

    Fashionasia:
Oh I definitely skip foundation when I use BB creams. This one’s even thicker than my Clinique Superfit or MAC Studio Fix Fluid foundation! Reckon it would do well as a concealer instead.

    Irenelim:
This didn’t fully cover my freckles, but it did do a decent job in lightening them when I have it on πŸ™‚

    MisSmall:
I found it a tad thick to blend. It blends all right, just need extra work. I guess I’m already biased, so I can’t give it all that good a review :p Lazy me would prefer something lighter.

  7. Nikki

πŸ˜€ thanks for this honest review, very useful πŸ™‚

  8. plue

hm… i shall stick to etude house then… though i love the smell of this one! πŸ˜›

  9. miss p

hey this bb cream was the first and last i tried (and im still using it!!) i loved it the moment i had it. i use shade #2. I should try the others too but im just a poor student haha. i wil give the face shop’s and etude house’s a go when i get the chance to when i go back home!!

  10. the gal

  11. Tine

    Nikki:
    You’re very welcome πŸ™‚

    Plue:
Stick to what suits you best πŸ™‚

    Miss P:
Just as what I told Plue, when you’ve found the best, you wouldn’t need the rest!

    The Gal:
Glad it worked out so well for you πŸ™‚

  12. ciana

hi(: do u know if the skinfood bb cream will improve skin texture? like fade acne scars and such

  13. Tine

    Ciana:
I’m afraid I have not used the Skinfood BB cream long enough to see any differences on my skin. It’s a tad too thick for my liking, which made it a mistake purchase πŸ™

  14. Qi*

hey how much does the bbcream costs in australia?

  15. Sylvia

Thanks for the review, Tine. It is so useful as I am on the hunt for the right BB Cream. I’m just back from Skin Food at One Utama, PJ (Malaysia) and did a patch test on my face using this Aloe Sun BB Cream. I have sensitive prone skin which tends to redden and itch alot when the product is not suitable. I had this BB Cream patch test at my jawline where it is most sensitive area of the entire face. My skin feels alright within the first 4 hours of the patch test but after that it started to irritate. My guess is that the sunblock ingredient in the BB Cream is the culprit. Do you or anyone sharing this same problem as me? Maybe I need to try out the Skin Food BB Cream without the SPF one.

  16. Neenat

Awww. I love Skin Food also! but, it’s so expensive here! I tried to buy it on eBay but I heard that unless you buy it from a legit seller you don’t get the best product. & that it is best to buy it from a Korean seller because most of them are certified sellers of Skin food. But also, a lot of them take advantage of you so, I don’t know. Anyway, I ended up buying my Skinfood Aloe BB Cream and the Quad pallate on http://www.skintouchx.cc.cc They were really friendlyyy!!! And kind enough to send me free samples and a necklace gift. ~ Oh~ and free international shipping~~~

  17. chemistry

hey there, currently im looking for bb cream as well. i don’t know which one works best for me – so any recommendation? i have oily/combination skin, pimples, acne scar. based on ur experience/expertise, which one is the best for me? SkinFood or Faceshop? By the way, do you have any review on Etude House BB cream?

Oh ya, i have lots of blackheads on my nose. yucks. after using biore, it tends to grow again few days later. anyway to get rid of those blackheads?

  18. Tine

    Qi:
It depends really, on which brand of BB cream you’re looking for. In general, it costs about $30-40 per tube in Australia.

    Sylvia:
Have you ever had any problems with any sunscreen before? I mean, just with sunscreen on? If not, then it wouldn’t be the sunscreen ingredient, but something else. Either way, it’s best to stop using it and try out another πŸ™‚

    Neenat:
Thanks for the information on Skinfood πŸ™‚

    Chemistry:
Personally, I prefer The Face Shop’s Quick and Clean BB cream to any of Skinfood’s, purely because the one from Skinfood is a lot thicker in texture, which makes it very heavy on my skin. I have a very oily T-zone, but dry cheeks. Skinfood works all right on my cheeks, but not so well on my T-zone. Do check out The Face Shop if you want. Don’t buy yet; compare the texture and see which one you prefer.

I’m afraid I have no access to Etude House here, so I do not have any reviews on BB creams by Etude House πŸ™

Regarding the blackheads, what product from Biore were you using? The sticky nose patch thingy? Or the scrub? Would suggest you not to use the sticky nose patch, as it only removes the very top layer, and does not actually remove the entire blackhead. As for scrub, only keep it to once a week (maximum twice). What I do to remove blackheads is to go for a once-a-month facial (well, I did this in M’sia; can’t do it here as it’s pretty expensive per session), and/or extract those buggers myself with a sterilised blackhead remover and tissues. But be careful using it; if the blackhead’s too big to remove, then leave it be, or else it’ll leave a big hole. After that, give it a wash. I use Cellnique’s Pro Sebum Gel after that. It doesn’t remove blackheads as it claims, but definitely whiteheads. The blackheads did significantly reduce.

    Hope it helps! πŸ™‚

hmmm just wondering. If the consumer face have pimples n use it will it be worst ? Because from what i know is tat, if u hav pimples and u use foundation, ur pores cant breathe and tats when our pimples gets worst. is it true when applying this product ? Does it helps clear pimple n remove oil ? =)

  20. chemistry

Thanks for your feedback – was very useful to me.

What about Elianto’s products – have you tried their BB cream as well? I tot of giving a try because their price is slightly low as compare to others. Further, their BB cream comes all in one (brightening, spf, oil free – that’s make me feel to grab one). But through their website, the shades looks quite dark. What do you think?

Oh ya, my face don’t look shiny, bright (i mean i have a dull face) – any secrets to get rid of dull face or products for whitening?

Argh! i have so many things wanna do on my face.

  21. Tine

    Ghost:
Apparently BB creams work for those with acne, as it has pimple-treating properties. I cannot vouch for it as I do not have acne. When I had pimples, I used mineral foundation as it was light enough on my skin. Just because it didn’t work for me after a while does not mean it does not work on others, so if you like, you could give that a try.

BB creams do not clear pimples and remove oil. It’s a makeup product, not a skincare product. It would be best to take care of the skin first before trying out any makeup, or slathering lots of it on the skin πŸ™‚

    Good luck!

    Chemistry:
Nope, I’ve not tried Elianto’s BB creams. I only saw them a few weeks ago when I was back in Malaysia, and by then I already had 3 tubes of BB creams to finish. Better to not buy anymore :p I tested it on my skin; the texture is similar to Missha’s Perfect Cover.

I’m afraid I do not use whitening products, so I’m afraid I can’t help you there. If you like, you can check out Fuzkittie’s blog (fuzkittie.blogspot.com); she uses whitening products which work for her. Bear in mind though, the whitening products she use are expensive. Dull skin normally result from unremoved dead skin cells. Exfoliate your skin once a week (maximum twice) by using a gentle scrub or a washcloth on the skin.

Would suggest you to not do so much on the face all at once as you do not know which ingredient might counteract with another thus causing a breakout. It would be best to introduce new products slowly πŸ™‚

  22. Christinathing

i just buy the bb cream at one utama skin food, i feel so good after i using skin food aloe bb cream,

  23. Lyna

    i really like the aloe.
after applying, i didnt feel like i was wearing anything. maybe a sunscreen type feeling.
and it wore really nice and very light coverage. it camoflouged the redden area so its a good.
one thing i dont like is it kinda dried my skin a little. i have oily skin so it was okay but feel little like skin wasnt breeding. but when i got home and washed my face and woke up next morning my skin felt really soft and a lot of my acne went away. not sure if it was the bb cream but maybe the mix of my cleanser and it. i was happy. i think maybe 4/5 stars. and for the sake of other people i got mine at skintouchx i read it on someones blog. http://www.subjectbeauty.blogspot.com. it was the cheapest i found.

  24. ashley

anyone try l’egere bb cream or dr. schammek? i just ordered the l’egere, so i’m waiting to see what happens – would love any feedback you guys have to offer.
    thanks.

  25. chemistry

hie…any idea how to get rid of oil seed (i dont know what it actually call).
those appear below the eyes and some around the face?

  26. Tine

    Chemistry:
Those oil seeds would be called milia. Unfortunately, unless you have them extracted (consult your doctor), there’s no way in getting rid of them by just applying creams. A good way to prevent milia would be to get the top skin layer exfoliated regularly.

  27. chemistry

what causes milia? because of oily skin? did not wash properly? or the products we are using? what are the ingredients that we should avoid from using it in order to avoid/reduce milia?

    Thanks a lot!!

    hello,

I tried the skinfood foods emlsion for “pimple prone” its very pricey. the tea tree emulsion wil cost php.825 or RM.61.1873 in Malaysia. And then i think it doest work coz after using this it makes my face so bad. And then one day my friend email me me and she said that skinfoods bb cream the mushroom thing she said that her it helps your pimples dry fast and also the pimple marks fades quickly but i cant buy it bcause 1st its too expensive ots about RM.111 here its 1500.And then i ask my another friend she said that the faceshops bb is good and kinda cheap price than skinfood.

I used to buy some products of Skinfood. But, I’ve not spent some times with its’ foundations or BB cream. Your review is so specific and candid to give two sides of it, good and bad. My skin is really oily I think it’s no-go for me. Thank you so much for making notice about this.
