Pedicure Woes

20090703 Pedicure

I love getting pedicures. It doesn’t matter to me if the nail colour selection is poor; if the removal of cracked heels is good, and the massage of the calves and feet is good, then the nail salon is a to-visit-again in my books.

A new nail salon opened near my apartment a few days ago, and since it was offering a 20% discount on all services, I thought I’d give it a go. Everything was brand-new, and more importantly, the place looked very clean. They had foot spas connected to luxurious massage chairs. They had OPI and China Glaze. I was sold. It didn’t matter to me that the nail people barely spoke English. I wanted it.

Everything was okay, I was enjoying a good massage from the chair and the mini jacuzzi at my feet, until the actual pedicure began. To my utter disappointment, instead of using only nail files on my dry heels, the pedicurist whipped out a corn plane and began shaving at my heels. For those of you who are not familiar with a corn plane, here it is:

20090703 Corn Plane

I had a very bad experience with this when I was in Bangkok with Beetrice a few years ago. We had a pedicure at one of the better salons (better = at least not dodgy-looking like most of the others), and the pedicurist just went home with the corn plane on my heels. She was so vigourous with the corn plane, that she nicked my heel and it bled. I had to hobble the rest of the trip because the nick became a really bad sore. Needless to say, I avoid salons that use corn planes from then on.

So back to my story with yesterday’s pedicure.

To give the pedicurist some credit, I’m glad she didn’t go nuts with the corn plane on my heels. She held my foot up and shaved like she was peeling carrots. Next came the foot file. She didn’t do a good job with that one, and after the pedicure was over, I left the salon with rather peely heels 🙁

My point is: as much as you can, avoid the corn plane. If done wrongly, it can nick your skin. It’s worse if you don’t know if the salon sterilises their equipment properly. Go nuts with a foot file instead. In Malaysia, I frequent a nail salon called Nails Hansen in Penang, and they do a fantastic job with different foot files, which remove all the cracked bits. My feet always feel like a million bucks when I left that salon. Yesterday’s experience, they felt (and looked) like a buck twenty.

Second point is: talk to the pedicurist and let her know what you want/don’t want. I made the mistake of not telling her to not use the corn plane. She doesn’t speak much English at all (although at one point, with my jeans hiked up to my knees, she caught sight of my legs and asked me “Miss, you want wakshing?” [waxing]) but I should have at least indicated to her I did not want her to use the corn plane. Mum was right. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Now I’ve got to get back to fixing my heels. Sigh.

ewww……that sounds scary…..it feels like ‘shaving my skin’ kinda feeling….that’s why i dont do pedicures.

I use to really like that shaver since for some reason I always get it at the same spots all the time. It is now banned in CA and I’ve been doing without it for a few years.

Btw, from 1 of ur last posts, i went out to bought a foot pumice/file tool thingy! =)))

I think I vaguely remember that…at the time, I thought they did a good job on my feet – but after coming back, my feet were even drier and more peely than before…because they had not only removed the dry skin, but healthy skin as well… 🙁

You’re right, sticking to a really good foot file is much better (at least you don’t end up looking like a peeled carrot with all the uneven surfaces!), and there’s not much that can’t be solved by applying a thick emollient moisturiser and going nuts with a foot file.. 😀

Unless you have Gollum’s feet of course…teeheehee…

i’m always paranoid when my manicurist whips out that scary looking thing. i’m scared that they will cut me by accident. and i heard from a previous manicurist that the more you ‘shave’, the thicker the skin will become in that area.

i’d rather let the doctor fishes nibble at my heels than use a corn plane!!

Thank you so much for the wonderful message, I am glad to be back…and glad to read posts again! I missed it!

Girl, I would never use a corn plane! I wouldn’t permit them to! Just by looking at it, I know I’ll get hut! 🙂 Thanks for sharing

Oh wow…that does sound awful! A friend of mine who “does feet” suggested that I look into buying one of my own! Now, I may consider doing it myself as I know how well it has been sterilized! I typically do my own feet anyway just to save on the money…don’t get me wrong- I do so love having it done “professionally”. Anyway- I just soak my feet really well with hot water and essential oils, wrap hot towels around them while I read a good magazine. Pumice them, add my ultimate favorite Topricin foot cream (all natural awesome stuff for tired, achy or callused feet), and Voila! They feel amazing 🙂 Thanks for the enjoyable article…liking your blog! Caroline

My wife is pretty concerned with the sanitary things she has in the spa. She bought this Pedicure Massage Chair for the simple reason that it has ozone sterilization.

    Vonvon:
Pedicures are lovely when done properly. When they use proper foot files, and do a good scrub on your feet and legs, ohhh heaven. Do give it a go 🙂

    Kalila:
Good! A foot file would do much better than a shaver. It’s safer too!

    Beetrice:
Exactly! I remembered hobbling in pain during our last-minute shopping, and that was no fun.

    Nikki:
There you go, confirmation from the nail queen herself! 😛

    Daphne:
I know, me too! I was really hoping the pedicurist would be gentle with the shaver. And she was, but in the end, my heels felt like poorly-peeled carrots. Oooh doctor fishes, eh? Would love to give them a go. I’ll make sure to bring something to bite on in case it gets too ticklish 😛

    Prettybeautiful:
So far, the nail salons I’ve been to do not use corn planes. I saw that they had it, but am really thankful they never used it, even with my super hard crackly heels. Phew.

    Caroline:
Ahh nothing like a good hot soak in water with bath salts and/or essential oils …. hmmmm …

I am all about the Pedicure Massage Chair. I just came from my girlfriends salon and I almost slept through the whole pedicure!
