What Is The Fashion Of The Noughties?

You know what the problem with fashion of the noughties is? Unoriginality.

20090914 Fashion

We had the 20s and 30s with short, swirly dresses with lots of beads and feathered headbands. We had the 50s with cardigans, pearls and full skirts. We had the 60s with the bouffant and Twiggy hair, Mary Quant tunics and go-go boots. We had the 70s with bell-bottoms, lots of polyester, bright psychadelic colours, cheesecloth dresses, skirts and long straight hair. We had the 80s with the shoulder pads, Joan Collins hair and attitude, plastic earrings (I remember this because my mum had a LOT of those). 90s arrived with *god-awful* carrot-cut jeans, and then some.

What do you reckon is the fashion of the noughties? I mean, with the comeback of fashion from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s (thank God the carrot-cut jeans phenomenon went to its grave and stayed there. But the shoulder pads are back. Gulp.) throughout the recent years, what is exclusively noughties? How much more ideas can designers recycle?

Sigh.

Perhaps the fashion trend of the noughties is a mish mash of all the other decades just “updated”. It seems that way to me anyway.

I’m so upset that high waisted pants have come back. I really do detest them.

I’m no expert, but I think skinny jeans are pretty contemporary?

i hate shoulder pads, though a small bit is ok. but still i hate them.

not to mention i totally dislike carrot cut pants. yucks. i remember the time my mom made me wear n i hated jeans for ages till i discovered the bootcut.

but i like the neon colours though, looks good on some ppl!

But skinny jeans are somewhat like carrot cuts, no? albeit more stylish and fitting.
But anyway, I’ve always hated high waisted pants, or anything high waisted, really. I can’t fathom why people still wear them. And don’t get me started on shoulder pads.
And one more thing, I’ve never gotten around to the idea of vintage clothes, like granny dresses etc. Some are fine, but some are unimaginably horrendous.

I love my skinny jeans because a good fitting pair can really elongate the legs. Anything high-waisted is crap, IMHO. Skinnies have been around for the past few years and I think we’re starting to see a return of boot cut jeans. Fashion of the noughties, as mentioned by PB, is probably a mishmash of everything with a hint of modern touch. I love the cardigans, pearls and full-skirt look. When (if) I finish that cardigan I’m knitting, it will be preppy-ish that way 🙂

Like Entertainment Blog, I too like the 1950s skirt. I do like the boot cut jeans or hipster still ..theres something sexy about them. I remember one of your readers had a blog dedicated to the 1950s dress / fashion ..i just cant remember the website to it.

I love my skinny jeans, bat-wing tops and alike but I think the noughties was a fashion era where they re-invented old styles and either embellished them or made them worse. As you say, it was were they recycled old trends and/or made them more modern. IMHO i don’t think that there was much of a trend in the noughties except for skinny jeans and ugg boots TBH.
