Maybelline Pure.BB Mineral Instant Skin Smoother 8-in-1 BB Mousse

When I was in Malaysia, I tweeted about a BB cream that I purchased, and Tina asked me if Maybelline’s BB mousse was available in Malaysia as she saw it in Taiwan a while back. It was available at Watsons and Guardian pharmacies, and I did not hesitate to pick one up to try.

Maybelline Pure.BB Mineral Instant Skin Smoother 8-in-1 BB Mousse Ingredients

I’ve used a number of BB creams, but I’ve never used on that came in the form of a mousse.

You have to be very careful when squirting the mousse out of the can, because a single squirt can produce a lot of product. You’ll also notice the change in the colour about 10 seconds after the mousse is out of the can. When the mousse is first out of the can, it’s very light brown. In a few seconds, the colour darkens. This is where it gets interesting because the true shade of the mousse is not the initial colour, but when it darkens slightly with warm undertones.

I’m not sure as to why the colour changes, but my hypothesis is that it has something to do with the compressed air in the can. It creates a lot of air bubbles in the mousse, and once the mousse is out of the can, those air bubbles on the surface subsides and you’re left with the actual colour of the mousse. I’m not sure if this is due to oxidation of the product, so if you know more, please let us know in the comments as to why the colour changes in the mousse.

The mousse is indeed very light in texture, and applies matte when it goes on the skin. Most BB creams I’m used to applies dewy and slightly moist on the skin, so this is a pleasant change. In fact, I don’t even need to dust a light layer of loose powder over the BB mousse, like I usually do for all my other BB creams.

If I’m not mistaken, there were only 2 shades available, and I selected the lighter shade. It was actually lighter than my skintone, so when I first applied it on my skin, it made my face look a tad pale. However, after an hour, the shade seemed to have adjusted itself to my skin and I no longer looked washed out. I have no idea how that happened 😛

Coverage-wise, I’d say this mousse is a medium to almost full. It covers slight imperfections like skin discolouration and hyper-pigmentation well without making the skin appear cakey. In fact, I find it to be more of a foundation than most BB creams I’m used to.

So, how does one apply this thingamabob? Squirt on the face and hope for the best? I wish 😛 What I did was control-squirt the tiniest amount possible (which always ends up to be the size of a golf ball) on the back of my hand, blend with my fingers, and then apply on the skin. I find it easier to work with fingers than a makeup brush.

I’ve been using the BB mousse for weeks now, and I’m happy to say I really like it. The matte application is good for oily/combination skin, and the SPF is also an added bonus (although I always apply a layer of separate sunscreen regardless). Again, no loose powder was needed with this BB cream/mousse. The mousse lasted on my skin for at least 8 hours with barely any fading. In fact, I thought it looked better on the skin as time went by as the skin looked more natural and less “made up”.

I can’t recall the exact amount I paid for this in Malaysia, but it definitely isn’t over RM50. I wish Maybelline Australia would sell this here, because I think if you like the Aussie version of the Garnier BB cream, you’ll like the Maybelline BB mousse.

What I like about it: Matte BB cream, which I think works better for those with oily/combination skin.

What I do not like about it: Only 2 shades available, not available in Australia

Great find lovely, Ive been a bit hesitant in trying BB creams as I have quite oily skin with breakouts & most consistencies seem to be a little rich for me. Which is why I’m yet to try one. This seems like a great alternative for me to dip my toes into the BB world. Pitty its not here in Australia. Fingers cross it comes over quickly.

Madam M: Have you tried any of the Asian brand BB creams (eg Korean brands), instead of maybe the Garnier BB cream? Most of the Asian ones are lighter in texture and more suitable for oily/combination skin. I’ve tried the Asian Garnier version vs the Aussie one, and I find the Asian version so much better. I hope this BB mousse comes to Australia too.

wow, there’s a moose version??? I really like! I have used the regular BB Cream version of Maybelline and it’s surprisingly good, just that the shade is a bit darker on me!

Nikki: I haven’t used the cream one, so I don’t know how that one works 😛 But this one, this one I’m quite impressed with. The lighter shade, which is the one I’m using, is actually a tad light on my skin. But after an hour or so, it kinda blends back in 😛

2 shades? i thought it has only 1 shade, maybe that was during the initial launch, am not sure. i got 1 when it just launched, but now i can’t remember what shade it is. I always fall back to powder foundation. your this shade is Natural? based on the tiny little japanese wording.

Plue: I Googled, and a number of blogs mentioned that there were two shades. At the time of purchase, I only found one, which is the one I’m currently using. I think Natural’s the lighter one?

      1. plue

i thought Natural should be the “natural shade” and the light shade should be written as 明亮 something something in japanese, and natural 自然 something something that’s how i check for shades in japanese haha.

Sounds good! Does the shade get darker as the day progresses? I’ve read some bad reviews of it oxidizing so I’m sceptical…

Bun Bun: I thought it would, but it didn’t. Funny right, since a few seconds after the mousse is out of the can, it changes shades? The mousse blends to my skintone just right after a while, without it looking dark on the skin 🙂

I’ve seen this product online somewhere! Pretty sure someone blogged a haul about it and it looked so interesting, except I didn’t know it was in a mousse-form! Thank you for the review! Been wanting to give BB creams a go!

Tram: This is quite different to all the BB creams I’m used. It’s quite an interesting mousse but yeah, have to really get cracking with the blending before it goes a bit weird on you with the shade 😛

This looks really nice, I liked the way it evened out the tone of Val’s hand when we tried it out the other night. I like the idea of an aerosol mousse BB cream! Wish it was available here. Do you know if many nice beauty products are available in Thailand? I’m so tempted to travel down to Bangkok while I’m away…tempting.

Emma: Oooh you should head to Bangkok, Emma! I love it. However, quite a lot of Bangkok areas are dodgy, so if you do visit Bangkok, I highly recommend you stay at Siam Square. It’s safer with lots of tourists and expatriates. It’s slightly more expensive that other hotels outside Siam Square, but it’s definitely safer. I’ve been to Bangkok twice, and I’ve always stayed at the Novotel at Siam Square. Plus there’s a Boots pharmacy very nearby 😉

  7. Aleas

i was gonna try this mousse but ppl r saying like it changes into orange pretty quick…i’m quite fair…so do u think it’d b ok for me?

    1. Tine

Aleas: They’re right, it does switch to a slight darker shade after a few seconds. The true shade is actually the darker one, and not what you see when it’s immediately out of the can. I’m afraid I don’t know exactly what your skin shade is, so I think the best way to know is just to try it out, I’m afraid. If you can, do try their testers first. Again, bear in mind that you have to wait for the mousse to settle first before trying it on 🙂
