Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil: Not So Good For One Thing, But Brilliant For Another

by Tine on July 31, 2012

Face Treatment Oils are one of Clarins’ cult products. Bet you thought it was only their Beauty Balms, eh? ;)

Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this face oil. In fact, I was apprehensive to even try it out. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with face oils. Love cleansing oils, no doubt about it. I like Kiehls’ Midnight Recovery Concentrate, but only to a limit. Can’t use it daily, at least, not on the face.

Description:
Natural astringent for Oily or Combination Skin. 100% pure plant extracts. Zero preservatives. Clarins’ exclusive blend of Rosewood, Geranium and Lotus extracts purifies, tightens pores and refines the skin texture. Hazelnut Oil softens, soothes and seals in moisture to prevent fine lines. Non-staining.

The Lotus Face Treatment Oil reminds me very much of the Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate. The fragrance is similar, and so is the consistency and texture of the oil. I used this on my face for a few weeks, but I’m afraid my face just didn’t agree with the oil. Daily use meant breakouts on the face.

Is that the end of the treatment oil for me?

Thankfully no. I found a way to use this, a place where my skin absolutely loves the oil. It’s my décolletage.

You see, I have a terrible habit of using hot showers, especially during the cold months. You really should keep hot showers to a minimum, because it irritates the skin. As for me, I find great comfort in hot showers, and I tend to hold the shower nozzle close to my chest. After every hot shower, my chest will be plastered with red patches. It’s a reaction to the hot water, especially when it’s sprayed directly on the chest.

It’s an awful habit of mine, just like eye-rubbing. I know it’s bad, I know I shouldn’t do it, but yet I still do :(

The skin on our chest is actually quite thin compared to our bellies, arms and legs. I’m not talking about our boobs, but the skin over the bony area above our breasts. Have a feel on your chest and you’ll know what I mean. It’s no wonder I get skin reactions from the hot shower.

Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil

This is where the treatment oil comes in. I use this on my neck and especially my décolletage. Just three drops of the oil, a gentle massage on the chest, and the skin calms down again. No more angry red patches and bumps. I find that it moisturises the skin very well too.

I may not have used it as intended because it just wouldn’t work that way for me, but I used it in another way that could help my skin. Every few days, I’ll use it on my face under moisturiser. This way, I manage to prevent breakouts on my skin.

Clarins Face Treatment Oils come in three types – Lotus (for oily/combination skin), Santal (for dry/extra dry skin) and Blue Orchid (for dehydrated skin). It retails at AU$49 for 30ml and is available at Clarins counters and selected pharmacies nationwide.

What I like about it: Very relaxing and lovely scent, moisturising oil for my décolletage, calms irritable skin.

What I do not like about it: Breaks me out if I use it on my face daily.

Have you used face treatment oils by Clarins? How did you find it?

I’m ALL for facial oils. Currently using one from REN for day use. ADORE it. Really really oily but it sinks in like a dream on my parched skin. Can’t wait to give this a go :)

LeGeeque: You might want to try out the Santal or Blue Orchid one (love the name!); those would be more suitable for your skin. If you like the Kiehls MRC, you’ll like this one :)

I’m pretty sure there are a lot of ladies now subconsciously feeling their chests after reading your post! (sounds so wrong!)

So far, the only facial oils I love to bits are the Kiehl’s MRC and Dermalogica’s Overnight Repair Serum…the rest get a “so-so” from me. :P Wonder how this one will fare…?

Beetrice: Hahahaha it’s true! A lot of people don’t know that the skin on our décolletage is actually quite thin. Nothing wrong to *ahem* cop our own feel to find out. Tee hee hee!

When i use the oil on its own i do feel a lil oilier but the beautician taught me a brilliant way to use it – add 2 drops into the toner so that the oil can be absorbed better. Saw a big difference in my skin and helped maintain a smooth hydrated skin. But i guess use it only when u hv acne/pimples. Stop when skin has improved.

Juan: Ooooh great tip, Juan! I’ll give it a go with toner then, because it just doesn’t go very well on my face on its own unfortunately. Thanks :)

Would never rub any oil onto my face as I am prone to breakouts! :(

I came to know about clarin’s facial oils very recently and was interested in trying them out but I am afraid of their cost and the thing that what if it doesn’t work upto the expectations!!! can’t see all that money down the drain.

Swati: Yeah I know what you mean. It will be a waste of money if you plonk down the money and it doesn’t work for you. Do try to get a sample from them at the counters if you can. If your skin breaks out, then it’s a no go. But I recommend you trying this out on your décolletage as well. Feels really good :)

I was using the kiehl’s MRC until I came across this oil and absolutely love it! The downside being it can’t be applied near the eyes, causing them to swell badly. I used MRC for nearly two years every night and it smells wonderful. For this I use every three days for overnight treatment mixed with toner and under clarins pink clay mask. The effect for this oil can be seen after a few uses, probably it’s more potent than the MRC, hence the allergic reaction on my eyes.

Thanks for the tip about not using it near the eyes, Kay. Will be sure to pass this bit of info on when I recommend this oil to other people :)

I have been using Clarins lotus Huile for the past 3 years and I absolutely love it!. My skin care regime is quite poor, but this is a must for me every night. I have oily-combo skin and this is pefect for me. I was initially skepctical about oiling my face, but now have no complaints. I love testing new stuff and on impulse bought clarisonic cleansing machine/system whatever for SG$375 and it caused my skin to break out something awful, but all the reading I had done about this product warned me to expect it, mentioning that it would subside in 2 weeks, but NO. I have pitted scars in my cheeks as a result of this experiment. But lotus Huile has helped to seriously minimize my pores. So would recommend to those with oily-combo skin types. Actually you could ask for a sample from your clarins counter and try it first. You will not regret it :)

Haha this one IS the Lotuis Huile! Too bad it was just so so on my face but it felt good on the décolletage :)

Ouch on the Clarisonic cleansing machine. I hate it when I spend so much money on something that doesn’t work as well as you want. Mine would also be the Clarisonic :(
