Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner: Sometimes, Ergonomics Should Be Left Well Alone

Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner

When the new Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner landed on my desk for review a couple of months ago, I was intrigued. I’ve been practising and using liquid eyeliner pens for 2 years now, and while I don’t have any problems with liquid eyeliner anymore, this one was different. It sure looked different. I’ve never seen a curvy eyeliner pen before. This was one of those things you want to rip out of its packaging and use it right away. I mean, it’s ergonomically contoured, which means this one should be a doozy to use, right?

Boy was I right and wrong at the same time.

As a liquid eyeliner, it’s a pretty damn good one. Its felt tip goes on steadily with no feathering or skipping (I detest liquid eyeliners that “skips” my skin because when it stumbles, it usually lands on areas I don’t want any eyeliner on).

Now I know you can see that there’s a smudge of eyeliner at the top of the eyelid and that’s because I looked up right after I applied the eyeliner. The eyeliner goes on wet so it’s imperative that you keep your eyes looking downwards for at least 10 seconds to make sure it dries properly. Once it’s dried, this baby does not budge at all.

Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner Swatch

As an experiment, I doodled on the back of my hand with the eyeliner, let it set for about 15 seconds and then rubbed it with my other index finger. With light rubbing, there was no budging nor smearing. With standard rubbing, it was still the same. It was only when I went all commando-mode and rubbed the bejeezus out of my hand, only did it start to smudge and come off.

I’ve had this on my eyelids for hours on end and not once did it smudge or budge. It’s one heck of an eyeliner, I’d say.

Sigh, how I wished it would stop right there.

No problem using the pen on my right eye

Honestly, I can’t decide if this is a dealbreaker or not because it’s how the product is marketed but I don’t like the curved shape of the pen. It’s supposed to be an ergonomic shape for optimal holding and easy application of the eyeliner. I can’t tell if my hands are too big or too small because I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to hold this properly AND apply a precise line on my eyes without mistakes.

Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner

Very fiddly trying to using it on my left eye

I’m right-handed, so holding it with my right hand and applying it on my right eye was fine. But I had a lot of issues holding the pink, curvy bit when using it on my left eye. I found it difficult to rest my index finger on the pink curvy bit, bend my arm funny and try to work this on my left eye. I’m so used to using a pen eyeliner that in the end, I just had to hold it as one. Now if I was ambidextrous, this pen would have been a godsend. Unfortunately, for me, it’s just fiddly and many a time downright frustrating to use.

Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner

Ended up holding it like a pen instead of resting my index finger on the curvy pink bit

It’s such a pity I didn’t like the curvy nature of the eyeliner because I get where Australis is coming from with an ergonomically-contoured eyeliner pen. It’s new and definitely different from the usual liquid eyeliner pens you see in the market. As an eyeliner, I cannot fault it at all because it is a good liquid eyeliner. But the packaging (with its ergonomic curve) frustrates me almost too much to use.

Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner

Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner retails at $14.95 and is available at Priceline and Australis Cosmetics online stores.

What I like about it: A very good liquid eyeliner that does not feather or skip on the skin, is water-resistant and smudge-proof.

What I do not like about it: Not a fan of the curvy pen at all; found it difficult to hold.

Have you tried this curvy liquid eyeliner before? What are your thoughts on an ergonomically-contoured eyeliner pen (or any other form of makeup for that matter)? A good idea or is it better to just stick to what works?

I have something similar to this by a different brand and I think (think so) the Australis’ handle is slightly bulkier. I am too right handed and I find it extremely challenging to use the left hand to apply eyeliner on the left lid. Solution: I used right hand for both eyelids. But gotta spend a little more time to find the right angle though.

I can’t use the left hand to apply eyeliner at all. That would be a miracle! But yeah, just like you, I have to spend more time finding the right angle to apply on the left eye with my right hand. It’s just awkward, isn’t it?

      1. Jessica W

Yep awkward indeed. And though it’s supposed to be ergonomically-friendly, I think the time taken defeats the purpose.

Oh! I can comment now! I couldn’t just now ๐Ÿ™ and I sent you and email. Haha, you can ignore it now, ๐Ÿ™‚ i was wondering if this is similar to NYX’s The Curve Liner? Have you tried that one? Does it feel the same? ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Tine

Haha I just replied your email! In short, I haven’t tried the NYX one before so I can’t really comment on that. But it really does look very very similar (ahem copyright ahem) ๐Ÿ˜›

Thanks for the reply ๐Ÿ™‚ haha, maybe Australis ‘didn’t know’ about NYX. cough cough. :p Haha. We shall just let this one slide ๐Ÿ˜‰

hmmm.. I actually find it easier to apply eye liner on my left eye, using my right hand (right-handed).. and since my left hand would surely be unstable for applying make-up, I still use my right hand for the right eye (more difficult)..

Can’t do the eye-liner thing without using both hands.. so I might need to practice how you’re doing it like the one at the photo above.

    1. Tine

Drats, just realised that the photos don’t show what hand I’m using on the left eye. It’s actually my right hand! Can’t do left hand on left eye. I’d poke my eye! ๐Ÿ˜›

    Hi Tine,

Was it difficult to remove ? Thanks for your review! Tempting indeed

    1. Tine

It’s difficult to remove if you rub it with your finger but with a makeup remover, easy peasy ๐Ÿ™‚

I think I would have trouble with this! I hold my master precise liquid eyeliner close to the tip when I’m applying it, so with this it would be too bulky

Kudos to Australis for thinking outside the box, but I think the packaging is a little too gimmicky. I would find it too awkward holding it like Australis suggests

Yeah me too. I tried holding the Australis one close to the tip and it just felt awkward. In the end, I had to flip it upwards to be able to still hold it like a pen without the curvy bit getting in the way.
I didn’t realise this until a reader told me about it, but it’s actually incredibly similar to NYX’s curve eyeliner, right down to the packaging and tip. Hmmmm…

Imma be honest… I think they should have left it alone. I don’t like fandangled new contraptions! Ha ha x

Hahaha I would love for them to just make this a regular pen. The eyeliner is actually really good but the fussy packaging just kinda turns me off ๐Ÿ™

Tine, I love how you posted those pictures of you applying the liner, and I can definitely tell that it’s awkward for you to use at a certain angle. This remind a lot of the NYX one. It has the same curvy shape. I have never tried this or the NYX one, but I tried holding something similar in shape and to line my eyes. It’s not comfortable at all.

I didn’t know about the NYX curve eyeliner until a reader alerted me to it. Hang on, it looks almost the same! Either way, it’s difficult to hold. It’s a pity because the eyeliner is good.

Hi Tine, I understand your thoughts as I also have this eyeliner. I love the actual liner, but funnily enough as a left handed person (with some ambidextrous traits – you pick them up when living in a right hander’s world! ;)) the ergonomic design was not that useful for me either. I use it holding the pen quite close to the tip and not around the “curve” at all! Oops…

Hahaha I know you’re a fan of the eyeliner! The actual liner is very good, I have to admit. It’s just the fiddly curve that’s not my cup of tea. I hold it close to the tip too. This way, I still get to use it and it’s not wasted ๐Ÿ˜›
