Makeup and Four Eyes: How To Work Makeup With Your Thick-Framed Glasses

I’ve been wearing glasses for 2/3 of my life. Blame my stubborn young self for preferring to read while lying down, which led to poor eyesight at a young age. Kids used to call me “four eyes”. It never bothered me because it just meant I could see a whole lot more than them. That was my theory and I’m sticking to it. πŸ˜›

Most of the photographs of me on the blog are without glasses but in real life, I prefer them to contact lenses. It’s just a lot more comfortable for me to wear for long periods of time compared to contact lenses. I save my contact lenses to be worn on special occasions, but most of the time, you’ll see me in glasses.

I’ve been wearing thick plastic full-frame glasses for many years now and I prefer them to delicate metal ones. I’m quite a clumsy person and the chances of me dropping my glasses on the floor are high. Flimsy glasses just don’t work for me because I’ve dropped them on the floor, dropped them in a pot of curry while cooking (true story!), sat on them, squashed them and so on. I needed something a lot sturdier and thick plastic ones work much better for my clumsy hands. Thank heavens they’re quite in fashion now because back in the day when I first started wearing glasses, trust me, they were FUGLY. πŸ˜›

I’ve attended major functions and events with glasses on. It took me a while to work makeup around the glasses because I wanted it to still look chic without hiding behind the glasses. The problem with full-framed glasses, especially with thick frames like mine, is that eye makeup often gets lost under the frames. I’ve done intense smoky eyes but when I put my glasses on, most of it “disappears” behind the thick frames.

There are a lot of videos on YouTube showing you how to wear makeup with your glasses. Here’s how I like to wear it. This works for full-framed glasses. Rimless glasses is like not wearing any spectacles at all so any form of eye makeup will still be clearly seen.

  1. As my frames are quite thick, I can do away with much less complicated eye makeup.
  2. Just a single wash of eyeshadow would suffice. My favourite method is to apply Maybelline’s Colour Tattoo in Bad To The Bronze all over the lids with my index finger.
  3. Line the upper lash line with liquid eyeliner, creating a flick at the outer corners.
  4. Use lengthening and voluminising mascara. I like Australis’ Voluptulash.
  5. Apply blush. Be slightly more liberal with blush. It might look a tad too much without glasses but when you put thick frames on, the lower frame casts a shadow on the cheeks. If you apply very little blush, the shadow pretty much voids the blush. This is why I tend to apply more blush when I have my glasses on.

And now, here comes the kicker – bright lips. When the glasses go on the face, the thick frames covers a lot of the eye makeup. It’s not that the makeup isn’t visible, it’s just not as obvious. Under harsh, direct-from-the-top lights, it casts a shadow on your face and lands on the tops of your cheeks, thus slightly shading the eyes. Bright lippies bring that pop of colour onto the face where the glasses cannot hide.

Makeup used for the look:
Face: Rimmel Match Perfection Light Perfecting radiance Foundation, Sephora Sculpting Disk
Eyes: Maybelline Colour Tattoo eyeshadow in Bad To The Bronze, Dollywink liquid eyeliner, Australis Voluptulash mascara, Benefit Brow Zings
Cheeks: Face of Australia blush in Hello Dolly
Lips: L’Oreal Color Riche lipstick in #288 Intense Fuchsia

These are just simple tips but they work very well for me. When I’m rushing for time, I can’t be arsed with fancy eye makeup so I just do the steps above, put on my glasses and out I go. Easy peasy. πŸ˜€

  1. I’m actually quite different. I love wearing contact lenses compared to glasses. Actually, wearing glasses for a long time makes my eyes feel weird and teary. I only wear them once in a while now. And whenever I wear glasses (Yes! full frame), I don’t wear any makeup because I’ll be at home. I can’t wear them outside because again, they make my eyes feel strange.

Haha I have a lot of friends (including my brother) who’s the same, who prefer to wear contact lenses to glasses. Sigh, one day. One day I’ll get LASIK on my eyes. Then I don’t have to worry about glasses or contact lenses anymore. πŸ˜›

You look great with your thick framed glasses! With that bright smile and gorgeous lipstick of yours, seriously TINE, you can get away even without makeup! πŸ™‚

Love the simple neutral eye makeup that still pops under the thick glasses πŸ˜€

Thanks Nikki! Most of the time, I do forget to wear eye makeup, so I just pop on a bright lipstick to hopefully get away with it πŸ˜›

I wear full-framed glasses too but I’m a guy and blush has been the only makeup besides concealer I’ve wore when using glasses, and you’re right they make everything more subtle in comparison.

PS. With this kind of glasses my friends say I look like a hipster.

Hahahaha me too! Or at least, I pretend to be a hipster πŸ˜› Yeah, eye makeup just disappears behind full-framed glasses, especially the thick ones.

Oh I LOVE your look here, the lip colour, the eyes … Wonderful! πŸ™‚

I wear glasses occasionally, one of those frameless delicate glasses so I do get away a lil easier than wearing a full framed one. I pretty much just amped up the eyeliner (a take on 60s kinda eyeliner look with emphasis on the lower lash with some bright coloured liner) and stronger hand on the blush.
But I like that you did a bright lip colour, it looks lovely! Maybe I’d try it the next time I wear glasses out to somewhere πŸ™‚

    1. Tine

Ooh sounds very nice! I like the 60s eyeliner look. It’ll work with rimless glasses πŸ™‚

I am a 4- eyes too! Ever since I got contact lenses, I almost can’t live without it. But work hours are so much longer than study hours that I have turned to glasses 2/5 working days these days. Like you, I love to wear my blush super strong because I feel that it just can’t be seen in the mirror otherwise.

I always skip the bold lips although I know I shouldn’t. But it is far too inconvenient to keep having to apply lipstick. I realise that eyeshadows don’t work too. ARGH T_T Eyeshadows are my absolute favourites in makeup!!! I am not a fan of eyeliner at all, because I just think it is not worth the time and effort, though I love the effect of having eyeliner. =P

You’re right about the mascara too. But I need to be careful what mascara I choose because my ultimate mascara (MUFE and Sasa) are too good that my eyelashes bang my glasses, and print the black ink onto my glasses.

    1. Tine

Oooh I know what you mean about the mascara banging against the glasses. I’ve had sunnies that were almost flat on my face and when I use lengthening mascara, it actually smudges the glass! I should have added that to the post as well. If the glasses are very close to the face, watch out for mascara! πŸ˜›

  7. Elin Maria

I wear glasses almost identical to yours, I do something light on my eyelid and focus more on the lower lashline, play around with bright eyeliner there.

Very clever Elin! Bright eyeliner at the lower lashline would look great with glasses πŸ™‚

  8. gio

I love this look, especially the bright lips. Beautiful!

You look great with glasses! I wear glasses a lot too. Mine are those delicate metal ones and I’m actually thinking of switching after they’ve taken one too many falls. I’m very clumsy too. Ahem..

    1. Tine

Thanks Gio! Your photos in your blog don’t show you wearing glasses too, which is why I didn’t realise you wear them πŸ˜› I think my last straw was me sitting on my rimless glasses and breaking them in two that I decided to go for thick plastic frames. Heavy bum + delicate glasses is not a good combo πŸ˜›

  9. Issa

you look good even with your glasses! i love the bright lippie and your last photo is gorgeous, love your smile Tine! πŸ™‚

    1. Tine

      Aww thanks Issa! πŸ˜€

  10. Natasha

You rock those glasses! They look great on you, esp. with that bright lippie! My glasses are medium-weight and I think they’re pretty versatile. I don’t have a choice between glasses or contacts… and I don’t have the cash to have more than one pair… so I try to keep the frames neutral so they go with everything.

    1. Tine

Thanks Natasha πŸ™‚ I wear my glasses most of the time, even to events, which is why I have to learn to work the makeup with the glasses. Keeping it at dark brown makes sure it goes with everything too. Imagine if it’s red frames, then I’m stuck! πŸ˜›

  11. Victoria

You look great in glasses πŸ™‚ Is the Benefit Brow Zings any good?

    1. Tine

Thanks V! The Benefit Brow Zings is not bad. Have to be a bit light-handed with the wax and powder though because they’re quite dark. The powder is especially, err, powdery. There’s a lot of fall-out on the compact. I’m not sure if it’s just my palette or not.

  12. Michelle Beh

Same as you Tine!! I will wear full frame specs! Half frame specs or frameless spec make me looked few years older . Till now I still do not dare to wear contact lens so I still wear makeup with full frame specs. πŸ™‚ I ll usually just do neutral eyes look.

    1. Tine

Aww you should give contact lenses a go. Get a trial pair from an optometrist to try out πŸ™‚
Still, full-frame glasses makes one look more hipster-ish so it might be a better look on you? πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

  13. Yi Lian

Hmmm… too bad I don’t have beautiful big eyes, my glasses make my eyes look even smaller with it. πŸ™ And yes, wearing glasses covers up the eye makeup. I have a friend who wears thick full frame and never wear contact lens. I always have problem putting on make up for her. @@ So, I think it doesn’t have to be complicated, just simple eye makeup, after all, glasses can be a nice accessories for some people too. XP

    1. Tine

Oh I agree, glasses can be a pretty accessory on the face. My face is quite large and when I put on weight, my eyes tend to look smaller on a big face. The full-frame glasses balances it out. Plus I don’t have to bother with much eye makeup too and that’s always a win πŸ˜‰

  14. Joyce (bronzerbunny)

you look cute with glasses! πŸ™‚ i have glasses too, and don’t have any idea how to apply makeup for them. I can’t get into the habit of wearing them, and i don’t wear contacts either.. Oh well, one day i’ll wear them and figure out how i want to do makeup for it! lol

Aww thanks Joyce πŸ™‚ I just find that you can get away with less makeup if you have full-framed glasses. So I cheat with a bright lippie. More often than not, I look more “made up” than I do without glasses simply because of the bright lippie. πŸ˜›

      1. Joyce (bronzerbunny)

Hmm I never thought about it that way before. thanks for the tip, hah!

  15. Lisa

Your glasses really suit you. I wear glasses more than contact lenses too. Do you know what your prescription is?

    1. Tine

Thanks Lisa. By prescription, do you mind the power or … ? My glasses are from Calvin Klein, left eye -6.75 and right eye -6.00. That’s all I know!

      1. Lisa

Your prescription is very similar to mine (-7). I love those frames. I may have laser eye surgery in the future but, for now, I’ll stick with the glasses πŸ™‚

        1. Tine

I’d love to get Lasik in future too. I’m practically blind without my glasses! πŸ˜›
