Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation: Go Ahead, Camera. Flash My Skin!

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

A few weeks ago, I was checking my stash of foundations (as we beautyholics do ;)) and realised that I don’t actually have any foundations that doesn’t contain any sunscreen in them. It didn’t come across my mind earlier that the reason I look rather ghastly (and ghostly) when photographed in the evenings with flash photography was because I tend to use base makeup with high SPF. Duh. 😛

Base makeup (foundations and BB creams) that contain medium to high concentrations of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide tend to reflect light from the camera’s flash, making our faces look grey and washed out. This is the reason bridal makeup uses HD foundations or foundations without sunscreen on the big day so that the skin looks as good as possible in photographs.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

So I reached out to my readers on Facebook on what their recommendations were for foundations without sunscreen or foundations that would look great even with flash photography. The consensus was Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation.

Now I’ve heard a great deal about this popular foundation and how it’s the Holy Grail of many a beauty blogger. I haven’t checked it out earlier because boy oh boy, this foundation is expensive (as expensive as my Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundie, which is a whole lot of yikes). Since I had enough foundations and BB creams to paint my entire body many times over, I decided not to jump on that bandwagon. Until now.

I finally bit the bullet and picked up a bottle from David Jones. I had my shade matched to #6. I thought it was initially a tad dark for my skin tone but it actually blended very well.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation Ingredients

Just as the name suggests, it looks luminous on the skin. It leaves a satin, dewy finish on the skin that doesn’t appear moist but radiant. The coverage is about a medium but it’s lightweight enough to be buildable without feeling heavy or looking cakey on the skin. In fact, the longer I had it on, the better it looked as the hours went by. It’s oil-free and doesn’t leave any greasy residue on the skin. I didn’t experience any breakouts nor did the foundation emphasise any fine lines. In fact, it covered the pores on my nose well enough without the need for primer. Now that’s saying something. *silent grumble about giant nose pores*

When the makeup artist at David Jones matched my shade and applied the foundation on my face, she used a flat foundation brush and applied what I thought was way too much foundation on me, far more than I’ll usually wear. It ended up looking rather cakey around my nose with fresh brush strokes apparent on my skin. When I went home to try it out again, I applied it with my fingers and buffed it out with my Shiseido foundation brush. The results were so much better: my skin looked fresh, beautifully luminous and it didn’t feel like I even had foundation on.

I tested flash photography on myself and while I really don’t like using flash if I don’t have to, it didn’t look bad at all. The list of ingredients states that it may contain titanium dioxide (which I suspect it does) but it doesn’t seem to affect how my skin photographs with the flash on. Which is, of course, awesome possum.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation Before and After

Was I glad to finally bite the bullet for the Luminous Silk Foundation? You bet I am. Now I know what you ladies were going on about with this beautiful foundation and all I could think was “why the heck didn’t I get this earlier??“. While I don’t think this has shot up to Holy Grail status for me yet (believe it or not, mine is a toss-up between Bourjois’ Healthy Mix Serum and Rimmel’s Match Perfection foundations. Both are really good cheapies), it’s very close. I’ll say it’s the best high-end foundation I’ve used thus far.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation retails at AU$90.00 for 30ml and is available at Giorgio Armani counters at David Jones nationwide. It’s expensive but it’s worth the $$$ in my books.

What I like about it: Leaves a gorgeous luminous finish on the skin, lightweight, looks good in photos. The last point alone is a big winner. 😛

What I do not like about it: Pricey for a foundation. Lord, it’s pricey.

Have you tried the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation? What did you think? Is it a Holy Grail foundie for you too like it is for many?

Haha yep now I know! No wonder it’s such a hit. Just wish it wasn’t so expensive though.

  2. Chelsea

That looks amazing! But holy berjeepers that is expensive. Maybe I’ll work my way through the 400 bases I have first….

Hahahaha I know what you mean! I have enough to paint my body I tell ya. So why did I get this again? Right, no SPF. Justified! 😛

I have tried quite a few Giorgio Armani foundations and I have loved every one of them. It looks beautiful on you and whilst it is expensive I think that it is worth it for special occasions.

I have to agree about the Bourjois Healthy Mix as it is also one of my absolute favourites 🙂

Yeah I agree. It’s definitely one to use for special occasions. I’ll be saving this for evening use only since it doesn’t contain SPF. Better for being snapped in photos too 😉

Bourjois hit the nail on the head with their Healthy Mix. It’s a firm favourite across the board.

  4. Shamim de Varax

I love the look of this foundation too =) but I’ve found a dupe with the maybelline’s fit me foundation at 1/4th the price!

    1. Tine

Ooh really? I’ve not tried the Fit Me. I’ll go swatch it to compare with the GA foundie 😀

The foundation really looks lovely on your skin. When I saw that the foundation was almost $100 AU, I wondered what the foundation cost in the US and it’s about $60 which is reasonable. I recently spend that much on the Estee Lauder Double wear, which is ok .. (doesn’t blend well).

Thanks Monica. I baulked at the price but decided to bite the bullet and get it. Thank goodness, I ended up really liking it. Imagine spending heaps of money and then only end up disliking it. Yikes.
I heard a lot of good things about Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation. It’s supposed to have good, full coverage?

I’m so glad this worked for you and you are in love! I have been debating this very purchase for a while now, and well, you know I hold my favourite bloggers opinions very highly 🙂

Boy that price tag does make the heart stop, but I’m willing to give it a try. I have one foundation that is my “I’m not scared of you, flash!” kind, but really the only reason it works is because it’s way too dark for my skin. Not pretty, really lol.

(Ps – I’ve missed reading your awesome posts, and it’s great to be back!)

Hey good to have you back Kaye! x

In hindsight, I really should have gotten a sample first even though I did have this applied on me in store. But the makeup artist was so nice that I felt a tad guilty taking up so much of her time (she spent over 30 mins giving me a makeover) without purchasing anything that I decided to get the foundation. When I said nice, she was super nice. I ended up with 4 deluxe samples of skincare and makeup AND a makeup bag! There wasn’t even a promo or GWP thing going on! 😛

  7. Annamaria

Ha, your HG foundations are mine too! 🙂 And frankly, I have been considering GA Luminous Silk recently, but the price keeps putting me off.

    1. Tine

Try getting a sample of it to try first? You might end up not liking it. Is it bad to say that fingers crossed you end up hating the sample so that you can save your money for something else instead? 😛 😛

      1. Annamaria

Good idea! Not at all, I find it liberating to know an expensive product doesn’t work for me; I don’t has all the monies! 🙂

  8. Norlin

Have not tried this but yes have heard so much about it. But….found a dupe…apparently it’s a dupe…starts with the letter “L” and cost me next to nothing because I bought it from Target during my trip to the U.S. 😉

  9. Hanis

It is my favorite, try to replace it with other brands but still hands down it is the winner…for light coverage I used their face fabric, for med/high used luminous/lasting silk/maestro…p/s: glad you like yours 🙂

    1. Tine

I’m really glad I like it too. If I didn’t, boy that would be a waste of a lot of money 😛

  10. Hilary

    $90!! OMG!! Really really! 😮

Having been stung on my last foundation purchase (hourglass – its good, but makes me go patchy by the end of the day), I’m sworn off expensive foundations now – got stung by a NP foundation before that which was a whole heap of dosh too. This is the only time I miss the UK with reasonable (to me) make up prices! (Although the fact everything else sucks doesn’t really make up for it lol).

Have to say I am really really impressed with my Revlon Nearly Naked liquid foundation at the moment – and I really didn’t think it would be a keeper for me, but its going well!

You look really lovely in that second photo though, glad its suiting you 😀 (The first isn’t too shabby though really! lol)

    1. Tine

Yeouch! Hourglass is expensive and I feel your pain. NP isn’t cheap either. Seriously, what’s with all the expensive makeup in Australia, eh? I was watching a YouTube video the other day on an American beauty blogger’s drugstore shopping haul, and no wonder they can buy so much. The makeup is so freakin’ cheap! At least half the price of what you see in Australia. Same goes for UK prices. Drives me nuts.

Anyway, I digress. Glad to know you enjoy Revlon’s Nearly Naked foundie. It’s actually pretty good!

  11. kerker

Ooh!! This is my favourite foundation!! It’s expensive but does lasts a while.

Haha with the amount of foundation needed per application, this is going to last me a looooong time 😛

  12. Jade

I have this, but I don’t love it. I find it emphasises dry areas on my face even if I moisturise beforehand, I might try actually mixing it with moisturiser and see how that goes. I do love Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation though 🙂

    1. Tine

So nice when a cheapie is better than a super expensive foundation, isn’t it? 😀

  13. aaj

Hi Tine…hmm…really not sure now whether I want to get this as it did not get HG status from you…:) …can I just ask, I heard that it can feel a bit too dewy on the skin especially if we were in a humid climate…from your experience, is this true…Thank u..

    1. Tine

I’ve not tried this in humid conditions so I’m afraid I can’t tell the difference just yet. It’s not very dewy that it looks moist on the skin. Thank goodness for that. I’ll try it out when it’s humid and let you know 🙂

  14. Joyce (bronzerbunny)

i’m 6 too! yesterday i wore it and applied a bit too much in the drier area of my face and that wasn’t as nice looking as i would have liked. oh well, it is still a nice foundation! I need to try that shiseido brush! 🙂

Oh dear, a reader experienced that as well, that it didn’t look good on the dry patches of her face. I haven’t experienced that yet. Fingers crossed!

Love my Shiseido foundation brush. It’s pretty pricey in Australia but so darn cheap in Japan! I bought another for backup when I was there. I paid $35 when purchased from Taiwan (a friend sent it over – it retails at about $10 more in Australia). I only paid $16 for it from a drugstore in Japan!

      1. Joyce (bronzerbunny)

i do have to say i prob applied a bit more in that area than i would have normally, AND i wouldn’t say it was bad at all – it just wasn’t perfect haha. I hope you never experience it lol! What a great deal on the shiseido brush! 🙂

Lemme guess … you too have enough foundation to paint your whole body many times over? 😛

Love this foundation definitely my HG foundation. Very pricey for you though, this retails about £35 in Britain!
