Top 8 Foundation Mistakes Most of Us Make

Even though eye makeup is more complicated to apply than foundation, you’ll be surprised at how many mistakes a lot of us make when it comes to the very base of our makeup. Goodness knows I’ve had my fair share of mistakes when I was learning how to use liquid foundation and even more so when I experimented with mineral foundation.

In fact, even after so many years of using foundation, I still make some of these mistakes every now and then. Heck, I’d look in the mirror and go “ah crap, why didn’t I blend the foundation out better? It’s all patchy and horrid now!“. Sometimes, we don’t even know we’re doing it wrong.

Today I thought I’d share with you the top 8 foundation mistakes most of us make. And by us, I meant *ahem* me. All of these were mistakes I used to make when it comes to applying foundation and believe it or not, I still fumble on a couple of them from time to time. I’m only human after all and I’m sticking to that excuse! 😛

Top 8 Foundation Mistakes Most of Us Make1. Too much foundation

A lot of us make the mistake of thinking that foundation can cover up blemishes on our skin, hence we pile on a whole lot of it on my face. The problem is, too much foundation can make our skin look cakey and very unnatural, especially if it’s already a high-coverage foundation. We actually only need a thin layer of foundation to even out the skin tone and to cover very minor blemishes. It’s better to use a concealer on blemishes instead of relying on foundation to do that job. I recommend using a sponge like the Beauty Blender or the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge to blend the foundation to a thin yet even finish.

My pleasure! So glad it helped. 🙂
Lemme know which one you ended up getting!

I usually apply to little and then think “this foundation has no coverage!”. Or I’m so drawn to those “natural” gray/beige shades.. that look awful. I’m one that needs to go have a makeup artist help me select a foundation.

It’s a good idea to get colour matched with various foundations in store. I do that when I want to try out new foundations without purchasing first. Don’t buy yet; give it a day and see how the foundation works for you. Some foundations oxidise after a few hours and you won’t be able to know that happens if you buy the foundation right away. We can’t return opened cosmetics here and I’ve definitely ended up with plenty of duds. 😛

I’ve definitely been guilty of overpowdering. Must use a light hand!

I think that’s why I’ve switched to the Guerlain Meteorites and for travelling, L’Oreal’s Nude Magique BB Powder for my powdering needs because I cannot overpowder with them even if I want to. Once, I tried a new matte pressed powder by Maybelline and I forgot that I don’t need that much powder, swirled my brush and applied it on my face. Yikes too much powder!
