Ooops About True Skintone Match But For Everything Else, L’Oreal’s True Match Foundation Is Spot On!

L'Oreal True Match Foundation

L’Oreal has done many foundations over the years but there’s one standout among the rest and that’s the True Match foundation. This has been around for a good number of years and it’s the most popular out of all of their foundations. And I can’t believe it took me this long to try it out and realise just how good it actually is!

When Priceline had their recent 40% off cosmetics sale, this was the only thing I had in mind to get. Of course, I didn’t just walk out of the store with one item; that would be so unlike me to miss out on the sale. I came out with TWO! Ahem. 😛

L'Oreal True Match Foundation

In terms of packaging, I give L’Oreal props for choosing a pump over an open bottle like their Nude Magique Eau de Teint (I don’t think I’ll ever stop complaining about that packaging). The new packaging is sleeker than the original shapely bottle. It’s easy to dispense foundation and is pretty much spill-proof in my books.

I’m afraid that in my rush on getting this foundation and wanting to get the hell out of Priceline’s sale crowd, I picked a shade that’s slightly darker than my actual skintone. It’s not unwearable because I’ve been wearing it for weeks and I reckon this will suit me better during the summer months but, y’know’, just in case you’re wondering why my foundation is too dark for me, well there you go. 😛

This results of this foundation is reminiscent to Rimmel’s Wake Me Up foundation. The texture is not as rich nor thick but the radiant, glowy appearance it gives is very similar. It’s very light in texture, almost watery and blends to a powdery finish, matte finish. It’s not overly matte and it doesn’t cake around the corners of my nose and fine lines of my face. There are tiny bits of shimmer in the foundation that makes the skin appear glowy but not glittery like a disco ball.

Upon initial application, it would seem as though the coverage for this foundation is light but as you blend the foundation on the skin, its coverage is about a medium. The formula is light enough to layer to give higher coverage without the risk of looking flat and unnatural.

As for lasting power, I’ve had this foundation on my skin, on warm days for at least 10 hours and there was barely any fading. In fact, the longer it’s been on the skin, the better the skin looks.

L'Oreal True Match Foundation

All in all, this is a good foundation. In fact, I’d even go as far as to say it’s a great foundation. I’ve tried many good drugstore foundations and I’m happy to add this to the list. I give this two enthusiastic thumbs up, even with my silly mix-up of shades!

L’Oreal’s True Match foundation retails at AU$29.95 for 30ml, comes in 11 shades and is available at major supermarkets and pharmacies nationwide.

What I like about it: Lovely finish, decent pump packaging, easy to apply and blend, very lightweight, great coverage, looks even better after several hours of wear.

What I do not like about it: This is pretty pricey for a drugstore foundation in Australia. Sigh.

Have you tried the popular True Match foundation? If you have, did you like it?

Dang that is pricey, but I sure would be keen to try it out on a sale. Come on 50% Off L’Oreal Sale!

Chemist Warehouse is now selling L’Oreal makeup. They do 50% off Revlon, Rimmel and Maybelline cosmetics from time to time; I’m just waiting for that to happen with L’Oreal!

I tried the True Match years ago when it first came out. At that time, my skin was a lot more oily and it didn’t work as well. I was living in Malaysia and the humidity didn’t help. I thought it came in way more shades than just the 11? It was a decent foundation but nothing mind-blowing. In fact, I thought it was way too heavy for my skin at that time. Granted I was a lot younger then and had way better skin than I do now 😛

True Match is supposed to come with more shades; that’s why it’s so popular, because it can match many people. Strange that Australia only stocks 11 shades.

I tried True Match years ago and thought it was kind of cakey, even though the shade was spot on for me. But it sounds like the formula has changed and I should try it again. Thanks for the recommendation.

I’d interested to know what the original formula was because this is very light, which makes it hard to be cakey. At least, it didn’t cake on my skin when I applied layer after layer to build up coverage.

Hi Tine, I am so glad that you love this as much as I do! I have been thinking that I am alone on True Match because I hardly see any beauty bloggers writing about this foundation. I am very impressed by L’oreal because my shade fits me even though it is not an exact fit!

I love the True Match so much because it is everything you described! True Match seems to last forever on the skin without budging. A little goes such a long way – 1 pump is always enough for everything. The texture is so good that it hardly needs any powder to set. True Match also has golden microspecks in it that makes the face glows but look invisible once applied. True Match is a foundation that photographs like a dream.

(I am going on a rant now. Hope that does not spoil your blog too much.)
I am using G3 and I think it is slightly too cool brown and ever so slightly too dark for me because the “golden” series are meant for olive skin tones. I am a typical medium warm yellow – the SE Asian way but Singapore does not carry any of the medium yellow shades that I see on the U.S. websites. Singapore only brings in 5-6 very random shades – the pales shades are cool tone and the dark shades are warm tone; medium shades are neutral N3 and golden beige G3. I am completely frustrated by L’oreal importer here. The Maybelline importer does much better.

Furthermore, L’oreal changed le teint True Match to the True Match in the square bottle that you have. Nothing wrong with the square bottle because the consistency is the same. But something wrong with the shades Singapore has.

I tested the square bottle in stores according to L’oreal recommendation because they cancelled many shades including mine. G3 is now matched to Rose something. I am so mad because the replacement is too light and too pink for me. And the next shade in the new square bottle is too dark. =(((

I only take some consolation from the fact that my bottle is still 95% full and I will take another 2-3 years to finish every drop of my le teint True Match.

Sounds like the official distributor for L’Oreal in Singapore is a bit screwy with the shades they bring in. In fact, there are far more shades available in the US, yet we only have 11 here. If you need me to check out your proper shade for you here to see if it’s available, let me know. Happy to help!

Here in the States, True Match comes in a cheap bottle which is a pain to use. Ugh! Our label is different, too!

Oh, I guess your comment boxes edit out HTML- probably to keep out spammers. My IG acct has it, though. It’s a pour bottle, no pump, and adverts SPF on the front label. It’s alright, but my skin has weird tones from being ‘mixed’ (Seneca, Cherokee, Norse, etc.) so finding foundation is difficult. I’ve had better success with Maybelline Instant Age-Rewind foundation. That stuff saved me when I broke out into hives at work (in a restaurant!) I could have lost my job for that! But Maybelline covered it right up. True Match, ehhh. It oxidized a little strangely on me, and has lighter coverage, which I think is good for most people, but I have a very reddened face so the heavier the better.

Oh hey it was you who tagged me on IG on that bottle of True Match! Thanks for that! Ugh it doesn’t look good. Definitely looked better in the ads than it does real life.

I have this foundation in W1 and W3. I’m a MAC NC20. I have to buy 2 shades to get my perfect match. But i don’t mind, it’s a beautiful foundation, even better than high end foundations. They used to sell W2 but they discontinued it.

    1. Tine

I’m not usually a fan of needing to buy two bottles of foundation of different shades to form your perfect shade but if the foundation works very well for you, then by all means go for it! If it was my Holy Grail foundation, I would too. 🙂
