Trying out brands of skincare I’ve never used before. So far, I’m pretty impressed with Dr LeWinn’s skincare range.

1. I sleep with a stinky bolster, and have done so with the same bolster for the past 20 years. I cannot stay at a place for longer than three weeks without it. I even brought it with me during my business trips to Japan. The smell comforts me. If I can, I wouldn’t even wash it
2. I’m borderline obsessive compulsive when it comes to how things to be placed and/or kept. It has to be done my way. No, I don’t believe the world would end if they’re not placed a certain way, but I’d be real uncomfortable if I cannot change it to the way I want it to be. This only applies to my house, of course. So don’t worry about inviting me to yours; I’ll leave your stuff alone.
3. I have access to the great chocolate drinks/mix here, e.g. Cadbury, but I still think Milo is the best. Minum Milo anda jadi sihat dan kuat! (Drink Milo and you’ll be healthy and strong – it’s Malaysian Milo’s slogan)
4. I can’t work head or tail about a sewing machine. I can solder tiny pieces of wires and components together without problems but I freak out at the sight of a sewing machine.
5. I cannot eat out for over three days in a row. Neither can my husband. We’d rather just eat steamed tofu with rice or noodles if we’re too lazy to cook than to order a takeaway after the third day of consecutive dining outs.
6. I can clean the kitchen, clean the living room, and even the bathroom without complaints, but I don’t do toilets. Period.

SKINCARE

What facial cleanser do you use?

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. It’s great for sensitive and troubled skin.

What toner do you use?
Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion No 3. A bottle takes a year to finish. But after I finish the bottle, I’m going back to a toner by Simple. I think it’s better for the skin.

What moisturizer do you use?
Day moisturiser: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel
Night moisturiser: Clinique Moisture Surge Extra

How many times a day do you wash your face?
Twice a day, during my showers.

Do you use eye makeup remover? If so, what kind?

Payot Demaquillant Sensation Yeux Et Levres dual texture eye makeup remover. It was a gift and is the BEST eye makeup remover I’ve ever used. Easily removes waterproof mascara.

Is your skin oily, dry, or combination skin?
Combination. I have a really oily T-zone, but dry cheeks.

What is the best part about your skin?
My cheeks. It’s probably the only part of my face which is smooth :p

What are your skin problems?
Blackheads on my T-zone, clogged pores, and ever-growing amount of freckles despite how much sunscreen I use.

MAKEUP

What foundation do you use?

Liquid foundation – MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15
Mineral foundation – Everyday Minerals

What powder do you use?
Estee Lauder Lucidity Translucent Loose Powder

What eyebrow pencil do you use?
A Kanebo Testimo eyebrow pencil. Quite expensive on the first purchase, but it lasts a long time. I’d just need to buy the refill everytime I’m out. I bought it over a year ago, and so far, I’m still on my first pencil.

What eyeliner do you use?
I’m still deciding between the indelible gel liner and Covergirl’s LineExact liquid eyeliner and which one I like more. Both are good but give me different (but good) results. For the lower lashline, I use Rimmel’s Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil.

What is your favorite eyeshadow?
I don’t have a particular favourite eyeshadow, although I really like the duo eyeshadows by NARS.

What mascara do you use?

Covergirl VolumeExact waterproof mascara. Doesn’t really give me that va-va-voom volume on my eyelashes but at least it gives me no clumps.

What are your favorite lipbalms/glosses/sticks?
Oh dear. This is a very tough question because I have so many! I like the lip gloss by Benefit and Nars. I love Softlips lip balm. They’re pretty much the only lip balms I’d use. I’m not really into lipsticks, but I’d have to say the ones by Maybelline are very good and moisturising.

HAIRCARE

Do you color your hair?
I used to. I’ve done red, copper, gold highlights, back to red, and just before I left for Australia, I dyed it back to dark brown to match my actual hair colour. My original hair colour actually makes me look younger.

What is your stylists name?
In Malaysia, that would be Esther from Bellitas Hair Salon in Penang. I’ve been her loyal customer ever since I was 15. She (and the rest of the girls) knows my hair inside out. I haven’t settled on one here in Melbourne yet. I’ve been wanting to try out Korean salons though.

What salon do you go to?
Bellitas Hair Salon in Malaysia. Over here, so far I’ve only been to Carmen, at Balwyn (as recommended by Geekchic).

What is your natural hair color?
Dark brown

What is your hair color now?
Back to dark brown. Whee!

Do you have straight or curly hair?
Well, wavy hair, to be precise. I have coarse, wiry and unmanageable hair.

Do you use a curling iron?
Nope. I want my hair straight, not curly. I don’t need extra curls. My coarse hair is naturally wavy.

A straightener?
Yep. I had to, ever since I got my haircut in April. The hair stylist gave me too much layers, which my hair couldn’t take. The volume is now twice as big, which simply look awful. Once it’s straightened, it looks much better.

What kind?

Remington T-Studio Nanosilver S8800. It’s the best flat iron I’ve ever used. It can also double as a curling iron since the ceramic plates are pretty narrow.

Do you use a blow dryer?
Yep. When left to dry naturally, my hair increases in volume. I use a Breville Avanti ionic hairdryer.

Do you use gel and if so, what kind?
Nope. Hair’s too long for gel.

Do you use mousse, and if so, what kind?
I used to, when I had permed hair. Yeah, what a big mistake that was. I don’t anymore. Have permed hair and/or use mousse, I mean.

What shampoo do you use?
Schwarzkopf Zero Fizz Shampoo

What conditioner do you use?
Schwarzkopf Zero Fizz Conditioner

Do you use leave in conditioner?

Yep. Shiseido Senscience Moisturising Mist and John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease hair serum.

SCENTS

What deodorant do you use?

Shiseido’s Ag+ Deodorant Powder Spray in Clear Soap. Great stuff, I tell you. Unfortunately, this is only available in Japan

What body wash do you use?
I’m currently using Johnson’s Dreamy Skin Creamy Bath cream.

Do you use a loofah, washcloth or soap to wash?
I use one of those mesh thingies to wash with when in the shower.

What perfumes do you use or like? Name five.

L’occitane Cherry Blossom (my wedding scent)
Elizabeth Arden’s 5th Avenue (I know a lot of people think it’s an “auntie” fragrance, but I love it because it smells good to me, and also it was the first perfume I used)
Clinique Happy Heart (the only perfume I have which I actually finished and am on my second bottle now)
Marc Jacobs Daisy (lemming for this one big time, but happy to just have the sample-sized bottle)
Estee Lauder Pure White Linen Light Breeze (I don’t have this one yet, ‘cos it’s too expensive to buy here. I go to the Estee Lauder counters everytime I go shopping just to squirt some on me and a perfume strip :p)

5. Makeup craving: Nars eyeshadows. Oh, and lippies by Benefit. Professional makeup brushes would also be nice (yeah, like I’m a pro. Still, they’re so pretty). And a train case. And many many many many more.

Purse – I got this cheap from Strandbags. I was previously using a very pretty floral Morgan purse, which I bought in Japan 4 years ago, but it was getting a bit worn now. I didn’t want that purse to fall apart, so I decided to use a cheaper one. Plus it’s pink!

Mobile phone – Samsung SGH U700. A gift from the hubby (he was using my Nokia N80, before he switched to an iPhone. Hmph). I wanted something smaller and much simpler, and this one’s pretty sleek.

Sunnies – I only carry this if I’m wearing contact lenses that day

Nivea Whitening Milk – I’m currently using this as a hand cream. I have so many travel-sized body lotions that I’ve decided to use them as hand cream. At least they do not go to waste.

Surprisingly, I don’t have much stuff in my makeup bag. I used to carry at least 2 tubes of lipsticks, which in the end, I felt I did not need, because the lip gloss sufficed.

Travel-sized hairbrush – got this free from one of the hotels in Japan

I used to carry a lot more stuff in my bag when I was in Malaysia, e.g. my big organiser, business card holder and a small bag of USB goodies (that’s a 512MB SD card, a 1GB miniSD card, a 1GB microSD card, 512MB and 2GB thumbdrives, and a SD card reader. Geek!). All these will go back in the bag when I get back onto the rat race

My Five Must-NOT Have Items
1. Nivea skincare products – I could be generalising here, but so far, NONE of the skincare products (except for the body lotions) by Nivea works on me. My skin breaks out easily after using Nivea products. I really don’t understand why.
2. Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum – This did nothing for me at all. And now I’m stuck with a white elephant in my cupboard. Does anybody want to take this off my hands? For free?* :p
3. Cocoa butter – I know this is good for the skin, but I steer clear of this because I cannot stand the smell of cocoa butter. Once, when I was in Japan, I applied this before heading to work, and my colleagues commented that I smelt bad. Ugh.
4. Nail polish on my fingernails – I love a good pedicure, and pretty coloured toemails, but I can’t have nail polish on my fingernails. I spent ages putting it on only to end up smudging them later. I could never be able to paint them on nicely, and 5 minutes later, they’d be chipped. It’s frustrating, I tell ya. That was the reason I wore gloves the whole time at my wedding. No need for lovely manicures which I’m sure to muck up.
5. Bright blue eyeshadow – I did a stint of this when I was in Japan. Just smacked the blue on my lids, with hardly any blending. Looking back the photographs, it looked positively GHASTLY with my washed-out face. Now I stick to very subtle blues, or mix it with a little shimmery yellow to soften the colours. Geez, what was I thinking back then?!

My Five Biggest Makeup/Skincare Crimes
1. Over-tweezing my eyebrows – this is a big boo boo of mine. I can’t seem to keep my itchy hands off my brows, and more often than not, I over-tweeze one side. Pathetic attempts on salvaging the other side to match the mucked up side just makes everything worse.
2. I’m pretty lazy with eyecreams. I have loads of ‘em, but I always forget to apply ‘em. One day it’s on, five days off, oops-I-forgot-about-it, put it on again. Etc etc.
3. Lack of care to my feet – I’m terrible at this. I know I should apply foot cream on my dry and cracked heels every night, but I’m just too bone-lazy to do so. My poor feet screams of dryness all the time.
4. I put sunscreen on my face religiously, but not on my arms and legs *gulp*
5. Sometimes I pick at my blackheads when I’m bored – this is a huge NO NO, people. As much as you can, leave the blackhead removal to the professionals.

Now I’d like to know what Paris, Beetrice, Geekchic, Fashion Asia and Pretty Beautiful are going to reveal about their own makeup/skincare mistakes

I know this is difficult, especially when you’re looking for foundation (the tone is best selected when tested on your jawline), but drugstore brands like Maybelline, Loreal, Silkygirl, etc do not exactly have clean makeup testers, as everyone else has dug their grimy fingers on the stuff. If you want to try it on your face, I’d suggest you to take a piece of tissue, and rub the powders for a bit first, before you apply it on your face.
