Commercialising Breast Cancer Awareness

20091029 Pink RibbonAs much as I understand and support breast cancer awareness in October, I did not feel compelled to talk about it much (other than a gentle reminder to do a breast self examination) this year. As time goes by, I feel as though the cosmetic industry is seeing October as a “let’s come out with pink products, slap pink ribbons on them, and c-c-c-cash in!” month. Harsh as it may be, it certainly looks like that’s what’s going on.

Just like Valentine’s Day, Breast Cancer Awareness month is becoming more and more commercialised. Sure the pink makeup’s pretty. But it annoys me at times when I see these major cosmetic tycoons churn out products, telling the public that they would, for example, donate 10 cents of every product sold. The thing is, these “limited edition” products usually cost a pretty penny. What is ten cents compared to the huge profit margin they get in return? Merely chicken feed.

For once, I’d love to see a cosmetic brand say “this year, there will be no new products just for breast cancer awareness month. We will, instead, donate the money to an awareness foundation and/or charity”. That would be good now, wouldn’t it?

Breast cancer awareness should be carried out every day. Women going through breast cancer and survivors of the illness should be remembered every day, and not just in October. Breast self examinations should be done every month (something I finally started doing and have continued to do so after seeing the GP and doing my pap smear).

I did not intend this post to be patronising, especially for those who have bought limited edition makeup during the awareness month. Or even rally for breast cancer awareness in forms of walks and marathons (hats off to you. Really). I’m simply writing this to remind myself that I should never get carried away with all the new and pink products I see come October (and I do. It is difficult to resist those pretty, pink items). Hopefully I’ll remember to read this post again next October and remind myself to donate that money to the National Breast Cancer Foundation instead.

Fancy Schmancy Kotex Platinum Tampons

So there I was, at Chemist Warehouse getting toothpaste, when I casually sauntered to the feminine products aisle and saw the new sanitary napkins and tampons by Kotex – U By Kotex Platinum. The packaging’s so pretty that I just couldn’t resist. Oh well, it isn’t the first time I was sucked in by packaging anyway.

Mia Freedman wrote an article about this new product too, and I was really tickled by how she likened it to luxury tampons for fancy vaginas. Hmm I guess I never did ask my va-jay-jay if it needs to be treated with luxury products. How would I even know it’s behaving well?

Reckon I’ll have to wait till that time of the month to try these out and find out 😉

Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Mini Tote

Geekchic, Paris B and I are terrible for each other. It’s true. Three bag lovers should never be allowed together (albeit via the powers of the Internet), spurring each other on to buy yet another bag. Tee hee hee 😛

Last week, Shopbop.com had a two-day 15% discount off any item in store. I’ve been eying a particular Rebecca Minkoff bag for ages, and with the strengthening AUD and the discount, there’s no better time to finally get that bag. After the discount and factoring in the exchange rate, it’s equivalent to a full-priced Oroton, but with a designer tag on it. I’m more than happy to get it as Rebecca Minkoff isn’t available in Australia. Shipping was also free for any order above US$100, which made me even happier.

This is awfully similar to the Morning After Mini Paris bought. In fact, I reckon it’s the same one, but in a different colour. Unfortunately, she was charged with taxes when it was delivered as it was declared as a leather bag. I factored that into my purchase, but was very glad to find out that I didn’t have to pay any taxes on the bag. Shopbop had cleverly declared the bag as “Women Apparel for Personal Use“. Phew.

The delivery of this item was incredibly swift. I ordered the bag last Thursday afternoon, and received it today. I would have gotten it yesterday if not for my request for address change to UPS. Plus, the real-time tracking on their website made it a whole lot more fun to anticipate its arrival.

I love the gold hardware on the pebbled leather. Made the bag quite heavy on its on too.

My favourite part of the bag? I absolutely ADORE the damask print. It goes so well with the lovely black leather. And the blue zipper makes an interesting combination to the bag.

I can’t wait to condition the bag and bring it out for a spin. I love the smell of the leather so much, I can’t stop sniffing it. Crazy much? 😛

Beauty Tip of the Day: Do Not Brush Wet Hair

Never use a brush on wet hair, and do not over-brush wet hair. Wet hair is more easily damaged than dry hair (when hair is wet, its hydrogen bonds have been broken and the hair is therefore in a more vulnerable state). On wet hair, it is best to use either a wide-toothed comb or a wide-bristled brush with rounded tips.

When I was younger, I used to use a fine-toothed comb to comb my wet hair. You know those sort of combs where you get for free from hotels? Or the god-awful orange combs boys love to slip into the back-pockets of their jeans? (Malaysian readers would know this very well) Yep, those. As I have really thick and coarse hair, it takes longer for it to detangle, so I would really force that comb down. It didn’t make my hair look any sleeker when it was dry, and the amount of split hair I had was crazy. I don’t even mean split ends; strands of my hair would tear, right in the middle. And my itchy fingers would break those strands just for the heck of it, leaving me with uneven, split-ended hair.

20091027 Wide Toothed Comb

After I learned of this tip, I purchased a wide-toothed comb to see if it made any difference. I’m glad to say that although it didn’t lessen the split ends much, the amount of torn hair in the middle reduced significantly. It also helped to comb it less, especially when it’s wet.

So lay off that brush when your hair is wet 🙂
