The 5 Rules I Live My Life By

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough
– Mae West

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, you’d notice that I’ve been posting a few photos with the hashtag #appletisersparkle. So, what was that all about?

Beautyholics Anonymous is proud to be a part of Appletiser’s “Get Your Sparkle On” campaign. It’s a fun one to participate in because they asked me to answer a very interesting question – what are the 5 rules that you live your life by?

If you really think about it, all of us do have rules in which we live our life by. I don’t mean rules like “I have to eat 3 times a day by certain times” or “life is only complete if I make lots of money or marry a rich man and have plenty of babies” (cough). They may not even be called rules. Call them guidelines, if you will. It’s how we want to live our lives. It’s what makes you happy. It’s what make you YOU.

My rules are very simple. Here are 5 of them:

Holiday-ing in Japan: I Hauled Japan Home!

Okay, in hindsight, it’s probably not that much but when I was packing for home on the last day of the holidays, I had problems stuffing everything (including Tim’s shopping) in the luggage 😛

I went a bit bonkers at Matsumoto Kiyoshi. It’s a drugstore chain that sells a crazy amount of Japanese cosmetics brands including the ones under the big names like Shiseido, Kanebo and Kose. Most Matsumoto Kiyoshi stores have 2 floors, where the second one is dedicated only to makeup. I bought very few skincare products mainly because I didn’t understand what they were. At one point, I had to text Shizuka with a picture of a bottle of something and asked her what it was for 😉

Holiday-ing in Japan: 50 Highlights

Tokyo 1

  • Travelling to Japan for holidays is so different from travelling there for work. There are no expectations to blend in at all. I’m a gaijin (foreigner) and I’m not afraid to show it! 😛
  • Everything in Japan seems so different, yet familiar in many places.
  • If you’re planning a holiday to Japan, I highly recommend you rent a pocket wifi device prior to travelling. I got mine from Rentafone, which cost 6900yen for 7 days with high Internet speeds and unlimited data usage.
  • Lack of free WIFI is notorious in Japan and it’s expensive to pay for WIFI at hotels. The pocket WIFI will help you plan your trip, find your way (Google Maps was a lifesaver, especially in Kyoto where we got lost a number of times) and communicate with Japanese folks who can’t speak English (although body language works just as well most of the time).
  • The Japan Rail Pass was quite a good bargain for us as we also had Kyoto in our itinerary. It allowed us unlimited use of the local JR trains and shinkansen (excluding subways) for 7 days. However, if you’re only planning to check out Tokyo, then I would not recommend the JRP as it’s cheaper to just buy regular tickets.

Holidaying in Japan: Travel Beauty Essentials

I have a bad habit of overpacking when traveling, especially when it comes to toiletries and makeup. I almost always ended up bringing things I don’t need and forgetting the things I do (e.g I’d forgotten toothbrush and toothpaste but remembered to bring hair oil that I never used).

For the trip, I planned months in advance on what to bring and this time, I made sure I only brought the essentials. Well, as essential as I hoped it to be 😛
