Nailing It: Essie Colours of Couture Collection

Essie Colours of Couture Collection

It must be autumn in the air because I’m seeing a whole lot of nudes and neutrals in makeup these days, particularly nail polish. Now I’m not really a fan of nude nail polish but for the past month or so, I find myself reaching for nudes more often compared to my usual bright reds, blues or greens. Is it just the season or am I becoming a dull ol’ sod?

Essie’s Colours of Couture collection stood out for me because with the exception of one shade, it’s gorgeous. Essie’s formula is usually a hit and miss for me; not all are good. But for this collection, there are a few stand-outs that I just have to share with you.

Garnier vs Bioderma: The Battle of the Micellar Waters

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

I’m sure you’ve heard a great deal about Bioderma’s Crealine H20. It’s the makeup remover of choice by makeup artists and it’s so gentle on the skin that it won’t sting the eyes, is fantastic on sensitive skin, will remove your makeup in a jiffy, refresh your skin AND you don’t even have to rinse your face after using it (even though I still do a very quick one). It’s a great product and is one that sits proudly on my bathroom shelf.

I’ve tried other micellar waters after using the Crealine H20 and sadly, they didn’t deliver as well as the Bioderma did. That was until I stumbled upon Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water. Oh boy, does Bioderma have some competition on her hands or what.

What To Do With Unused Beauty Products? Donate Them!

Donate beauty products

Earlier this week, I posted a picture on Instagram that this week is Declutter Week for me where I get rid of the physical and emotional clutter in my life. And let me tell you, it feels pretty damn awesome. I’ll talk about it more in another post but today, I’d like to talk about beauty products. Specifically, unused beauty products.

I love my job, I really do. I get to try a heap of new beauty products and write about them here without getting into debt (no joke, it can happen). I’m very lucky to be sent beauty products to try out and sometimes, I’m sent an entire colour range of a particular product e.g. foundation. Different bloggers do things differently; there’s no right or wrong. For me, I get an estimate of my shade on Findation.com before selecting the shade to use. I try my best not to open every single foundation to find out my shade because then they’re unsealed and I cannot give them away. These products end up wasting away in my beauty cupboard and in time, I begin to accumulate clutter.

This post was difficult to write because I don’t want to sound ungrateful and say that my beauty products have turned into clutter. It’s easy to come across as that because hey, I get sent stuff, what am I complaining about? I guess when your house becomes a bit of a fire hazard from having at least 10 cans of hairspray, many bottles of nail polish, lots of flammable products and you live in a tiny house with minimal storage space … at some point, a lot of those beauty products have to go. And I haven’t even began talking about the products I purchase and that’s a lot!

Giving My Cheeks A Luminous Flush with Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Blush

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Luminous Flush

When Hourglass came out with the Ambient Lighting Powder, it caused quite a frenzy in the beauty blogosphere. Almost every blogger and her mother wanted one of those. Including this one (excluding mother, who wasn’t at all interested). I was also one of “those” *insert emphasis* who deemed the Ambient Lighting Powder a must-have because, ah heck, it was! Apparently I enabled quite a number of you to buy it. Ahem. Just doing my job, folks. Just doing my job. 😉

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Luminous Flush

So when they launched the Ambient Lighting Blush, guess who got even more excited? Yeah, sorry folks, no prizes for guessing right because I’m just that obvious. The pictures were so beautiful and downright tempting that I knew I had to get at least one to try out. When this finally launched at Mecca Cosmetica, I went to my local store to check it out. They didn’t have the full range and to be honest, I was disappointed at the darker ones. They looked so dull and not anything like blushes. The darker marbled blushes were similar to the Ambient Lighting Powder, only more pigmented. Sigh.

Still, I was game on at least getting one so I got the brightest shade of the lot that was available at the time, and that’s the Luminous Flush. I needed something that gave me a pop of colour blushes do, not contouring powder. Luminous Flush did just that.
