Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light: A Highly Worthy Opponent For Guerlain’s Meteorites

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light

When I did that bit of a shopping spree at Mecca Cosmetica a while ago, I didn’t just pick up the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. No siree. It just seemed wrong not to get another item, a very popular item in fact, and that’s the Ambient Lighting Powder. πŸ™‚

I’ve read and heard a great deal of this powder. Temptalia likened the results to something of Guerlain’s Meteorites and gave it a fantastic rating of A+. Hmm something that gives me that sort of glow the Meteorites give me? Sold! After deliberating with the makeup artist at Mecca on which one to get, I decided on Mood Light.

The compact comes in quite sturdy plastic. Unfortunately, it’s a huge fingerprint magnet which makes it look grubby every time I use it. It doesn’t come with a sponge or brush (oh no, you have to buy the brush separately and that doesn’t come cheap at $50, which is close to what the powder alone costs). It’s a pity because I’ve tried the brush and it’s oh so soft.

The powder is a finely milled one. It has a beautiful, buttery smooth texture that I just love.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light Ingredients

The Ambient Lighting powder comes in 6 shades. They don’t necessarily mean that the light powder suits lighter skin tones or the darker one for darker skin tones. Most of the powders go on pretty translucent so you can’t really see it alter the colour of your skin. What each powder does is that it ranges from fully matte to full-on shimmer. It depends on the finish you’re looking for. They also come in warm or cool undertones. The one I chose was the Mood Light that comes midway between fully matte and lots of shimmer. It’s just nice on my skin giving it a somewhat matte yet radiant finish.

The Mood Light also has pink undertones. I have warm skin tones with very yellow undertones in fact but somehow this pink-toned powder just lifted my skin tone just a little bit more. I didn’t think it would work but I’m so glad it does.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to show you how it looks on my face because just like the Meteorites, it won’t show in photographs so you won’t be able to see it clearly. I’d like to say, take my word for it, but really, if you can, do try it out in store because it’s a beautiful, beautiful powder.

I love how subtly radiant this powder helps my skin look. It’s not gritty nor powdery, and doesn’t sink into fine lines. It gives my skin a beautiful glow, like I’ve had a good sleep the night before. And you know we ALL need to look like we’ve had good sleep. πŸ˜‰

I find myself reaching for the Ambient Lighting Powder so much the past month that my Meteorites have taken a back seat. It’s almost sacrilegious that I’m swaying so much towards the Hourglass powder given how much I love the balls. The Ambient Lighting Powder just gives my skin that extra bit of oomph that the Meteorites isn’t.

I haven’t been using any loose or pressed powder to set my makeup, only the Ambient Lighting Powder and it works just as well. I won’t say it’s very good in controlling the oil production around my nose but the beautiful overall effect this powder gives me is more than enough for me to overlook that small issue.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light

Will I get another Ambient Lighting Powder of a different shade? Hmm probably not, since this does a great enough job as it is. Then again, didn’t I say the same about the first tin of Meteorites I purchased? Um… how many tins do I have now? *cough* Four. *cough* πŸ˜›

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light retails at AU$62.00 and is available at Mecca Cosmetica.

What I like about it: Leaves a beautiful radiant finish on the skin, compact and good for travelling (compared to a tin of balls)

What I do not like about it: Nothing

Have you tried any of the Ambient Lighting Powders by Hourglass before? What do you think? Which one’s your favourite?

I’ve looked at the Ambient Lighting Powder at Sephora and I’m just not convinced that it’s something I need. I do love Hourglass cosmetics though ..

Hourglass has great makeup, I have to say. I didn’t think I’d need this either. Well, okay, to be fair, I don’t technically NEED this like I didn’t need the 32467 blushes and lipsticks I have but oh well.. πŸ˜›

I’m going to try this next trip to Sephora, and I will ask for help on choosing the right one. I think I’m cool but I’m not sure, and I’m so curious about the different finishes. I don’t have a setting powder that I love, so maybe just maybe this might be worth the big price tag. I do love Hourglass!

When I saw this a number of times in store, I always thought that different shades were meant for different skin shades but I was told they’re not. Makes sense since the powder is almost translucent on the skin (you can’t tell from the swatch that it’s translucent because I was very heavy-handed in the swatch to show you the tone of the powder).

Hahahaha can’t argue with you there. The balls are gorgeous, aren’t they? I wanted the compact version to bring with me but holy cow, they’re expensive! Thank God for this πŸ™‚

I badly want to buy this. But Hourglass just pulled out of Singapore. Or rather, the sole distributor seems to be losing money, so they shifted location, and dropped Hourglass altogether!

I am so incredibly lucky that I scooped up quite a number of Hourglass products before it went.

No way, that’s awful! Hourglass has amazing products; it’s such a shame they pulled out of Singapore. πŸ™

Oh boo πŸ™ Lemme know if you want me to get one for you from here. Or get them parcel-forwarded from Sephora, whichever is cheaper for you πŸ™‚

I’ve seen this at Sephora and thought it was very pretty. Thanks for the great review I think I will give it a try!

My pleasure, Barbara! It’s a beautiful product. πŸ™‚

We must be twins! I also love this & featured it in my blog & our pics are so similar/photoing on a wooden background = it really made the powder stand out. I truly love this product & plan to go back for more colors. It really gives you a glow – not shimmer, which is not attractive on us over 50!!!
    You have a lovely site!

    1. Tine

Thanks Mimi! Appreciate your lovely comment. I adore the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder. Hello Photoshopped skin! πŸ˜›

Hourglass isnt available in Sephora anymore. I though i might wanna scoop the ambient light powders up during the 20% off sale but the sales girl said they dont carry that brand anymore. Such a bummer. However I read somewhere that galeria might have that brand. Should check it out if you’re around that area.

    1. Tine

      Hi Tiara,

Yeah I heard that it’s not available in Singapore any more. What a bummer! At 20% off, that would have been perfect πŸ™

I have the Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light and I love it but I always swatch Mood Light when I’m in Sephora. I wasn’t sure if it would be good on my warm skin tone since it’s more pink but since you say it’s lovely on yours I am very tempted to try this one. I wish you could get a smaller testing size. I love these powders, so luxurious!

    1. Tine

I have very warm yellow skin tones, which was why I was surprised when the Mood Light, which is a very pink-toned shade suited me so well. It did a good job in neutralising my, er, “yellow-ness” and makes my skin look great. Sigh I wish they sold the Ambient Lighting Powders in smaller sizes too. We have travel-sized ones here in Australia but only in Dim Light. Dim Light is okay for me but I much prefer Mood Light.
