Beauty Treatments On The Cheap

Daily Deals

More and more websites like Jump On It, Scoopon and Spreets (if you know of more, do let us know in the comments below) are on the rise these days. If you are not familiar with how websites like these works, here’s a short summary. They offer daily deals of stuff to buy, but instead of things, they offer experiences on the cheap, e.g. beauty treatments, cheap dining at posh restaurants, holiday packages (fancy swimming with dolphins? A balloon ride?), etc. There will be a quota of customers to fill when you purchase the deal. For example, if there are at least 20 customers who purchased the offer, then the deal is on, and your credit card is charged. If not, then your credit card is not charged, and the deal expires. These deals are not just available in Melbourne. Click on the city you’re after, and you’ll see local offers too.

I haven’t tried out any of the dining, gaming, etc offers, but I was very interested in the beauty treatments. I think it’s a good opportunity to try out beauty salons you’ve never been to before, and have beauty treatments at very affordable prices. I’ve already purchased 2 facials, a hair treatment and an IPL treatment (which I’ve never tried before, so the last bit should be interesting).

Beauty treatments in Australia aren’t cheap; a lot of which cost hundreds of dollars. With offers from these websites, you get to have facials, massages, mani-pedis, hair treatments, etc for well under a hundo. Score, if you ask me.

However, there are a few caveats to the very enticing offers:
– Check the expiry date to the offers. Most of them last a good year, but there are some which only lasts 3-6 months. Once the offer’s expired, your voucher’s useless.
– With the very cheap prices offered, you’ll bound to find hundreds of people who jumped on the deals as well. Get a move on, quickly make your booking with the salons as a lot of them will be fully booked out, especially during the weekends. A friend of mine couldn’t get any bookings in till February 2011!
– You might bump into some hardselling from the salon. I haven’t encountered this yet, thank goodness. Reputatable salons will not give you any grief, as they are known for good customer service and would want your repeated business. Do your research on the salons first before you click on the “Buy It Now” button.
– You might not get the full experience the salon would offer with the full-priced treatment.

It’s advisable to just purchase a few of these offers, arrange your bookings to a beauty treatment a month (something to look forward to, at the very least), and enjoy them. It’s very easy to be enticed by the amazing prices some of these salons offer, and certainly very tempting to keep buying. Bear in mind that it all adds up, and you might not be able to get the bookings you wanted. Research the salon, make sure you space all these treatments out, and enjoy.

I’ve got a facial waiting for me at the end of the month, which only cost me a mere 29 bucks, and I can’t wait!

I’m not affiliated with any of these websites and I’m not paid to do this write-up. Just thought I’d share some goodies I discovered with you.

Cancer Council Australia’s Girls Night In

Cancer Council Australia Girls Night In

Fancy a night in with your favourite girlfriends AND support a great cause?

Join the 200,000 Australian women attending a Girls Night In this October and turn a get together with the girls into a powerful fundraiser for Cancer Council to support women facing cancer.

Girls Night In is a great excuse to spend time with girlfriends while raising key funds for the fight against women’s cancers. Simply invite the girls over for a fun night in and ask them to donate what they usually spend on a night out.

Cancer Council spokesperson Deborah Stringer said Girls Night In is all about getting the girls together now, to keep the girls together later. “It’s about sharing knowledge, information, and supporting each other, all the things women do best, while helping Cancer Council fund research, prevention and support programs for women’s cancers,” Ms Stringer said.

Girls Night In raises money specifically for women’s cancers including breast, cervical, ovarian, vaginal and uterine cancers. More than 16,000 Australian women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancers each year.

Last year, over 11,000 Girls Night In events were held with more than 150,000 Australian women joining together to raise $4.4 million to fund new innovations in women’s cancer research, prevention and support services. These breakthroughs aim to overturn the confronting statistic that 1 in 3 Australian
women will be diagnosed with cancer before age 85.

This year Cancer Council is aiming to raise over $6 million to help beat women’s cancers. So whether it’s a DVD marathon, a good old-fashioned PJ party or an indulgent pampering experience, set a date now in October for your Girls Night In.

Who: You, your best girlfriends (family, friends or colleagues)
When: Any date in October
How: Register online, invite your girlfriends around for a ‘night in’ and ask them to donate the equivalent of what they would have spent on a night out.
Where: Your house!

Simply register at www.girlsnightin.com.au or 1300 65 65 85

I think it’s an awesome idea. A slumber party that supports the fight against women’s cancers. Who’s with me?

My First Primped Look Book Event

Primped Look Book Christina Hendricks

After missing out on a few of Primped‘s Look Book events, I was really excited to be selected to attend one this month (incidentally, also in conjunction with Melbourne’s Spring Fashion week). Many thanks to Val, who alerted me of the event.

I had difficulty finding a plus one for the evening. Everyone I asked couldn’t make it that day. Rather than putting it to waste, I contacted Val about it, and after a few tweets, Mel became my plus one. Good thing too, as it was a great opportunity to finally meet face-to-face.

The one-hour session at David Jones was mainly about introducing new trends of the season, e.g. coppery shades of eyeshadows, bright red lippies, sculpted skin, perfectly polished hair, nearly nude nails and more. Expert after expert talked about how to keep hair luxurious, ultra-soft and shiny (answer: argan oil), how to wear bright red lipstick without teeth looking yellow (answer: well, you just have to try them out to see which suits you. In general, if you don’t have perfectly white teeth, avoid orange-based red lippies), etc.

The beautifully made up Akisa and me, sporting a bad photo moment and shiny (read: oily) skin. This photo basically told me to bloody chuck that foundation of mine.

Mel and I with the lovely Yaz, editor of Primped. I felt as though I was in the presence of a celebrity. And yes, I was annoyingly giggly.

Last but not least, my plus one for the evening, Mel. She blogs too!

Participants of the Look Book event were also treated to discounts on cosmetics at David Jones. Unfortunately, as I was limping on a bad foot that night (the big bad blister on my right foot obviously did not stop me from going to the event. I have ’em priorities, as you can see), I ended up having to leave right after the session instead of staying behind to shop. *sniff*

The best part of the event? Other than meeting the lovely Yaz, why, the phenomenal goodie bag, of course!

Whee! 😀

PS: You can’t tell from the pictures, but I wore NARS Rajasthan on my eyes that evening. LOVE it!

Emmys 2010 Emily Deschanel
My absolutely favourite show, Bones girl, Emily Deschanel. Again, love the colour of the gown, but all that tiers, not so much. But I still love you Emily 😛
