Dermalogica mediBac Clearing Mattifier

Dermalogica Medibac Clearing Mattifier 1

Description:

A medicated topical treatment that clears breakouts, reduces congestion and controls shine. Silicones melt gently into skin to help diminish fine lines and smooth skin texture. Niacinamide, Zinc Glucontae, Yeast Extract, Caffeine and Biotin purify and inhibit overactive sebaceous activity while Salicylic Acid clears congested follicles to minimise future breakouts. Contains no artificial fragrance or colour.

Dermalogica Medibac Clearing Mattifier 2

This works as a makeup primer, and in my opinion, extremely similar to Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer. Which means it contains, and pardon my French for this, shitloads of dimethicone. So if your skin cannot handle skincare products with a lot of silicone in them, high chances are this wouldn’t work for you.

Nevertheless, this sort of makeup primers works fine for me, so I had no problems with the clearing mattifier. In fact, this worked better for me as it contained salicylic acid, which helped control breakouts and sebum on my oily T-zone. My foundation stayed matte for hours. Think of it as a good makeup primer with pimple preventative measures. Ding ding!

Dermalogica mediBac Clearing Mattifier retails at AU$68 for 40ml and is available at professional beauty salons such as Endota Spa, Pure Indulgence, etc. It is also available on Adore Beauty and Strawberrynet.

What I like about it: Keeps the oilies at bay, and my foundation matte around the oily T-zone.

What I do not like about it: Would prefer it to be less, err, silicone-y.

Tresemme Heat Tamer Protective Spray

Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray

Description:

There’s one rule when you expose your hair to heat — the hair must be protected. This product guards against heat and friction to keep your hair shiny and incredibly soft. It’s a fantastic tool for instantly transforming all hair textures, enhancing strands’ flexibility to reform and hold shape. To guard against heat styling damage and friction, spray this multi-use protective spray to keep your hair shiny and incredibly soft. It’s a fantastic tool for instantly transforming all hair textures, enhancing hairs’ flexibility to reform and hold shape. Also, the moisture-locking vitamin complex hydrates and is heat-activated to guard against harsh styling damage.

This spray smells quite yummy. No awful, chemical scent, but a slightly fruity one (similar to Tresemme shampoos and conditioners). It doesn’t leave any residue on my flat iron (another spray of mine did, which I will review soon), which is very good.

The instructions of the hairspray is to spray liberally 6-8 inches away from mid-shaft to ends. Instead of spraying it directly onto my hair, I prefer to spray the liquid onto my palm, rub my palms together and then apply it onto my hair. This controls the amount of spray I use and also to avoid the spray from misting onto my clothes or furniture.

I’ve been using this for a month, and I’m loving it big time. I use a hair straightener at least 4 times a week, and a protective hair spray is certainly most needed to protect my hair against the high heat. This is especially so with my very dry and coarse locks. This spray kept my hair shiny and soft. What more can I say? Love it!

Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray retails at AU$8.95 for 300ml, and is available at all leading supermarkets and pharmacies.

What I like about it: Smells good, leaves hair shiny and soft after ironing.

What I do not like about it: It only comes in one size. A travel-sized one as well would be nice.

Cetaphil Moisturising Cream

I’m a huge fan of Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser. Have been using it for years, have no problems with it. Many a time, the cleanser is bundled with a complimentary full-sized bonus product (especially if you buy ’em from Chemist Warehouse). A few weeks ago, when I purchased the cleanser, it came with a 50g tube of its moisturising cream. Score!

Cetaphil Moisturising Cream

Description:

Recommended by dermatologists for dry, sensitive skin.
A formulation of emollients and humectants bind water to the skin, softening whilst preventing moisture loss.
Lanolin, paraben and fragrance-free.
Non-comedogenic (will not block pores).
For facial and full body use.
Helps to relieve baby’s dry skin.

Ingredients:
Purified Water, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate (and) Propylene Glycol, Paraffin Soft White, Dicaprylyl Ether, Glyceryl Stereate (and) Peg-30 Stereate, Glycerol, Dimethicone (and) Dimethiconol, Cetyl Alcohol, Sweet Almond Oil, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Alpha Tocopherol Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Disodium Edetate, Sodium Hydroxide.

Scent – It’s fragrance-free. I’ve been using fragrance-free sorbelene body creams of late, and I love them. At the very least, you’ll have no worries about clashing scents with perfume.

Texture – The moisturising cream is quite thick; in fact, it’s probably the thickest body moisturiser I’ve used. Nevertheless, it’s oil-free without leaving any greasy feeling on the skin. Even though its description states that it can be used on the face, I think I’ll pass on that. It’s probably too much for my oily face anyway.

This has easily become my #1 winter body moisturiser. It’s rich enough to use in winter, without being heavy on the skin. It’s not oily, plus it’s great for dry, sensitive skin. And, it’s cheap as chips!

Cetaphil Moisturising Cream retails at AU$8.05 for 100g and AU$11.65 for 250g, and is available at all leading pharmacies and supermarkets.

What I like about it: Rich but not heavy, oil-free, well-hydrating body moisturiser. Very affordable too.

What I do not like about it: Nothing

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment Is Fantastic for Broken Skin

I know I have been banging on about how great the Lucas’ Papaw ointment is for the lips, because that was what I have been using them for for months before. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I realise that the ointment is absolutely brilliant for extremely dry, chafed and broken skin.

Lucas Papaw Ointment

You see, whenever I’m stressed out about something, I subconsciously pick at the skin around my thumbs. According to my hubs, it’s apparently a way of my physical coping with the stress. Our move certainly was stressful all right, and a couple of weeks after the move, I was still picking at the skin around my thumbnails. It had gotten so bad that they bled, dried up, and bled some more. My thumbs were a complete mess. No amount of handcream could salvage my poor skin.

One night, as I was about to apply the papaw ointment on my lips, I decided to try them on my thumbs as well. Couldn’t hurt, right? Well, it couldn’t hurt as much as it was already hurting anyway. So I gently rubbed the ointment on the very dry and broken skin. Sure it was greasy, but I slept it off.

Thumb with Broken Skin
That’s actually 90% healed skin. Imagine what it was like before. UGH.

The next morning, the skin was 90% healed. I kid you not. The dried out icky bits of skin smoothed out, and the chafed skin does not hurt a single bit. It’s a miracle!

*HALLELUJAH!*

I’ve been recommending this baby to my friends with regards to dry lips, but man! It’s fantastic on broken and very dry skin as well. I absolutely love, love, LOVE this ointment to bits.
