Zap Those Bad Boys

To those people who said that you’d stop getting pimples once you hit your twenties and, soon for me, thirties, I’d so love to smack you on the head if I could. I’m 28, and I still get pimples. They result from hormones going amok or using products with irritating ingredients for my skin.

In order to combat my zits, when prevention methods are not quick enough for the darn things to appear, there are two products which I use to zap those bad boys – Clearasil’s Vanishing Pimple Treatment Cream and Garnier’s SOS Blemish Clear Pen.

Clearasil Cream and Garnier SOS Blemish Pen

Now I don’t use them simultaneously; there is a place and time for them, in which I’d explain in detail.

Here are the description and differences in both products:

Clearasil Vanishing Pimple Treatment Cream

Clearasil Vanishing Pimple Treatment Cream

  • Active ingredients: Triclosan 0.1% w/w, Sulfur Precipitated 8% w/w, Bentonite 10% w/w.
  • Smells chemical-y
  • Grainy texture
  • No skin reaction upon application
  • 20g tube

Garnier SOS Blemish Clear Pen

Garnier SOS Blemish Pen

Garnier SOS Blemish Pen Ingredients

  • Contains zinc, salicylic acid, eucalyptus, menthol and vitamin B3
  • Smells of menthol
  • Gel-like texture
  • Cool, tingling feeling on pimples
  • Smaller tube than the the Clearasil, very easy to slip into the purse
  • 10ml tube

Which do I prefer? I don’t have a particular favourite, as both do a good job in drying pimples out. I use the Clearasil at night, or when I’m at home and do not want to go out. The reason is that when the Clearasil cream dries up, it leaves a yellowish powdery patch on your skin (something like “bedak sejuk“, for Malaysian readers who remember what that is like). Not a good look when you want to go out.

As for the Garnier Blemish pen, it’s a clear gel which does not leave such an obvious patch on the skin. However, if a lot of it is applied, and on a larger surface area, it would look pretty obvious. It’s a matter of adjusting the amount. Of course, I don’t think you’d want to go out with pimple cream on your face, but just in case you do forget you’ve got it on, and you have to run out to run an errand, you wouldn’t look as though a bird just pooped on your face.

What I’m trying to say is – use the Clearasil at night, and the Garnier gel during the day. There you go.

The Garnier gel tends to sting the skin as it contains menthol. If you are not all right with that, do stick to the Clearasil, as it does not react with the skin when applied.

These pimple treatment creams are available at all pharmacies.

When those cursed bumps appear, do not, and I repeat, DO NOT squeeze them lest you want unsightly scars on your face. No matter how tempted you are to do so. Keep your hands busy, stay away from the mirror, do whatever you want but do NOT touch that face. Cleanse the skin with a gentle cleanser, and apply your preferred pimple treatment cream.

And then hope that it dries up soon enough before that big date 😉

ROC Minesol 30 Application Express Cooling Atomizer

Now that summer is here (well, Down Under anyway, and basically every single day in Malaysia and Singapore), it’s time to increase the use of sunscreen. And not just on your face, but your arms and legs as well (you’re not going to be clad in jeans during the summer, are you? ;))

I first heard of ROC’s Minesol 30 in one of the Malaysian fashion and beauty magazines when I was in Malaysia a few months ago. I was looking for a sunscreen spray then, so I thought I’d get a bottle from a Guardian pharmacy to give it a go.

ROC Minesol 30 Cooling Atomiser

Description:

This mist is so refreshing, you will look forward to using it! Transparent and very easy to rub in, it effectively protects from the sun and against photo-ageing. It is also very water-resistant.

Ingredients:
Alcohol Denat, Isobutane, Homosalate, Benzophenone-3, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Diethylhexyl 2,6-Naphtalate, Octocrylene, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Retinyl Palmitate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Trisiloxane, Acrylates/Octylacrylamide Copolymer, PPG-5-Ceteth-20, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Parfum.

This sunscreen spray has an SPF of 30, and is very easy to use. Just shake well, and spray on the legs and arms (keeping the spray at length of 6 inches). Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

ROC Minesol 30 Cooling Atomiser Spout

I apply this 20-30 minutes before I go out. All sunscreens should be applied around that time before sun exposure anyway. For use on the face, do not spray directly onto the face. Spray the sunscreen onto your hands first, and then apply it on the face. I wouldn’t recommend this for the face though, as it contains alcohol and fragrance, which I will talk about in a while. Methinks it better to stick to your favourite sunscreen specially for the face.

The Minesol 30 is clear, so it doesn’t leave any marks or streaks on the skin.

I often forget to apply sunscreen onto my arms and legs, so the spray makes it a lot easier and convenient for lazy bums like me. Just spray and go! Too bad they do not come in a smaller bottle; if it does, reapplication (a must for all sunscreens!) would be so much easier if I could slip it into my purse.

One thing I don’t like about this sunscreen spray is the smell. There’s perfume in the ingredients, but man, it’s rank. There is a strong chemical scent in which I do not like. I don’t know who came up with this so-called perfume, but they have got to get their head checked. It reeks of a mix of chemicals, which is just nasty. Thank goodness the “fragrance” dissipates quite quickly, or else I might stop using this altogether.

ROC Minesol 30 Application Express Cooling Atomizer (150ml) is available at Guardian pharmacies in Malaysia for around RM80. I’ve not seen this here in Melbourne though, so Australian readers, if you do happen to see this, do let me know, k?

Once again, don’t forget to apply sunscreen onto your arms and legs now!

What I like about it: Very easy to use; leaves a cool, refreshing feeling on the skin after use.

What I do not like about it: Very chemical-y smell to the sunscreen.

Beauty Tip of the Day: Sensitive Skin

Beauty Tip NoteTruly sensitive skin has a very low tolerance for fragrance and preservatives, as well as anti-aging ingredients such as retinol, AHAs, vitamin C, and many botanicals. If this sounds like you, test any new product on a small section of your neck, then observe it for 3 to 4 days to see if a reaction occurs. As a general guideline, dermatologists advise sensitive-skin patients to stick to products with fewer than 12 ingredients and zero fragrance.

In my opinion, whether you have sensitive skin or not, it is best to assume that you have it, and stick to non-irritating ingredients in any skincare products which you use (or wish to try out). This way, you can avoid any potential mishaps on the skin.

More Christmas Goodies

Just before the year ends, I thought I’d show you what goodies I’ve gotten for Christmas. Now there was that one by Nikki, which I ripped open immediately before realising that I should have kept it till Christmas Day, that is. Shucks.

And then these.

NP Set Eye Palette Closed

It’s a NP (Napoleon Perdis) Set Eye Palette in Seattle given to me by my galpal, Geekchic.

NP Set Eye Palette Opened

I’ve always wanted to try this out when it first launched at Target. Cheapskate me held back from getting this exact palette. I haven’t tried it out yet though, but I will when I meet up with her for Wicked The Musical this Sunday. Woot!

And then there was a gift pack sent by the lovely Prettybeautiful.

Gift by Prettybeautiful

An assortment of goodies – some facial mask sheets, a Sasa pocket calendar, a vial of Clarins Extra-Firming Tightening Lift Botanical Serum, Frownies, and a pair of sole cushions which I wanted to try out ever since she blogged about it. Aww I just love it when people remembered what I like. Sweet sentiments indeed 🙂

Last but not least, a small package from a dear friend.

Kanebo Testimo in 26CR

It was Kanebo’s Testimo eye palette! It has very darling purple shades, which I like. Yay, more makeup to play with! 😀

Girls, thanks so very much for the wonderful pressies. I was really touched. It was such a wonderful surprise to get these, and you’re such gems. *Hugs*
