Hands up all those who love soybean milk?
*waving hands frantically in the air*
I absolutely love soybean milk. When I was in Malaysia, the soybean milk and “tau foo fah“ man would drive by my neighbourhood almost everyday, clinking his spoon on his very old bowl, signalling to all that soybean milk and “tau foo fah” was here. Mmmm.
If you love soybean milk, good. Drink up, ‘cos it’s very good for your health.
Do you know that soybean oil (a protein-rich emmolient which is derived from soybeans) is really good on our skin too? For starters, it’s full of fatty acids. Fatty acids are key in maintaining and restoring health and balance of our skin. Soybean milk is also full of antioxidants such as vitamin E and B complex, which help restore the radiance of our skin.
Each cup of soy milk contains about 20 mg isoflavones (mainly genistein and daidzein). Cow’s milk does not contain isoflavones. Isoflavones have many health benefits including reduction of cholesterol, easing of menopause symptoms, prevention of osteoporosis and reduction of risk for certain cancers (e.g. breast cancer). Incidents of these cancers are very low in countries with high intake of soy products, including soy milk. Isoflavones are also antioxidants which protect our cells and DNA against oxidation.
For those of you who are lactose-intolerant, you can try soybean milk instead. It’s not the best of substitutes though, as there is a lack of calcium in soybean milk compared to regular dairy milk. Many soy milk manufacturers are adding calcium into their products, but studies show that it’s not as healthy as naturally-occurring calcium. Not to worry though, as calcium is easily obtainable from other sources such as sardines, almonds, other legumes, and several varieties of green leafy veggies (e.g. kale).
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a cup of pandan soybean milk to devour.
