Review: Silk Naturals Untinted Oil Control Primer

The trouble with wearing mineral foundation, compared to liquid foundation and loose powder, is that my skin tends to secrete more oil and sebum on my T-zone. Even with my oil-free Laura Mercier Foundation Primer, I’d still sport a shiny nose after an hour or so.

When Silk Naturals came out with an oil control primer, I was pretty eager to try this out. Who knows, I might be able to find something to control the oilies.

Silk Naturals Untinted Oil Control Primer

Description:

Our Oil Control Primer is all oil controlling ingredients- Calcium Carbonate, Silk Powder, and Silica- so it’s wonderful for absorbing the oilies, and blurs pores like you wouldn’t believe. Just a slight dusting under your makeup will make it last longer and look better. You can wear it all over your face, or just where you tend to get oily.

Ingredients: Calcium Carbonate, Silk Powder, Silica

The untinted powder is translucent, which is suitable for light to not quite medium skintones. As for those with darker skintones, you might want to go for the tinted primer, as the translucent powder can cause your face to look ashen.

So, did it work for me? I’m so glad to report that it did! And very well too, in fact. It kept my skin matte and oil-free for at least a couple of hours. With my bloody oily T-zone, that’s pretty much a miracle. The ingredients of the primer powder absorb the oil, leaving the skin matte and oil-free. So far I’ve only tried this with mineral foundation and not my liquid foundation. I shall give y’all an update when I do try it out with other types of foundation.

Silk Naturals Untinted Oil Control Primer Opened Jar

As with mineral foundation, you’d need a little powder per application. Don’t use too much though lest you look like a ghost! Apply it with a kabuki brush, and then mineral foundation. Easy peasy 🙂

A 20g jar of the Silk Naturals untinted oil control primer costs USD8.95, and is available on the Silk Naturals website. It’ll last you ages as you’d only need a light dusting of the powder prior to application of foundation.

What I like about it: The primer controlled my oilies very well. Whee!

What I did not like about it: Nothing … yet.

Beauty On The Go: My Makeup Bag

It sure wasn’t easy deciding which makeup item to bring with me on vacation. I mean, what if I suddenly wanted to use another colour but I didn’t have it with me? It was a thinker, all right. After much consideration of usability and practicality, I decided on these items.

Travel Makeup Bag

The makeup bag is from David Jones. I love the pink-and-white polka dots. The top of the bag is a zippy mesh container, and there is another section at the bottom of the bag where I stored my eye pencils, mascara and lippies. I had to bring quite a bit of makeup with me as I’ll be attending a very dear friend’s wedding in September. What can I say, I need more tools to do the face up good :p

Travel Makeup Bag Items

Signature Minerals mineral foundation
Silk Naturals Oil Control Primer
Everyday Minerals Multitasking concealer
Everday Minerals blush in All Smiles and Sunday Brunch
Max Factor compact foundation
Bourjois D’un Coup de Pinceau light-reflecting concealer
NARS duo eyeshadows in Habanera and Brazil
NARS Orgasm
Bloom eyeshadows in Beige and Pewter
Laura Mercier Foundation Primer (I depotted some into a spare EDM sifter jar)
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Shu Uemura eyelash curler
Steel lash comb
Covergirl LashBlast waterproof mascara
Covergirl LineExact liquid eyeliner
Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal eye pencil
Kanebo T’estimo eyebrow pencil and brush
Sally Hansen Invisible lip liner
Avon Pro-To-Go lipstick in Cherry Glisten
Bloom Lip Lacquer
Tweezers
The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil facial blotting tissues
L’occitane Cherry Blossom solid perfume

I placed the mineral makeup in a sandwich bag to prevent any accidental spillage onto the makeup bag. The 5g jars are so small and portable; I can bring more blushes with me :p Oh, and have I told you how much I LOVE these 5g jars? Seriously, you don’t have to bring your full-sized bottles and jars of lotions and potions. So depot, depot, depot!

Travel Makeup Brush Set

The travel makeup brush set is from Lumiere. I replaced the powder and blush brushes with my beloved Everyday Minerals flat top and angled brushes as I’m more used to these brushes when it comes to foundation and blush application. Better to stick to the brushes I’m used to, even on vacation.

So what do you think? Too little? Too much?

Beauty On The Go: My Toiletries Bag

I have two bags for all my toiletries. One bag just doesn’t seem enough!

I don’t compromise on my skincare routine even when I’m traveling. I don’t use normally use free skincare samples when traveling because I don’t know what they can do to my skin. As the humidity in different countries (and different altitudes) can vary, I find it best to stick to my usual skincare products, lest my skin start breaking out unnecessarily.

So, to avoid bringing my full-sized bottles and jars of creams and liquids, I decanted most of my skincare items into travel-sized bottles and jars.
