I Epilated And I Liked It

Would you be interested in trying out Braun’s latest epilator, the Silk-Epil 7 Xpressive Pro? We would love to send you one.

Oooh yes please, thanks!

Braun Silk-Epil 7

In my enthusiasm in wanting to try out something I’ve never done before, epilate, it finally dawned on me that it was something I’ve never done before. Epilate. Hang on, isn’t that tweezing a lot of your hair at one go? Did I just agree to that?

It might seem weird to you, but I’ve never removed hair from my legs and arms before. The hairs on my legs are so fine, they’re hardly even noticable when I’m in a skirt or shorts. The hairs on my arms are thicker, but they’ve never really been a problem. Plus, growing up in Malaysia and with my parents, I get quite a lot of crap from my mum when I even suggested shaving my legs. “Aiyoh*, you shave one, three grows back! They become thicker! You’ll have rough skin!“. Of course, I was young then, didn’t know any better, didn’t know the anatomy of a single hair, etc.

I digress.

A couple of weeks later, the epilator arrived. It gave me the giggles as to how it arrived. The courier rang my doorbell, asked me for my name and handed me this large beach bag. It contained a beach towel, silk scarf and the boxed epilator. He gave me such a quizzical look when he held the beach bag to me with two fingers (“what crazy package is this? I have more important parcels to deliver, yo!“).

I immediately shot an email to Val, and messaged Legeeque over Gmail chat, bombarding them with questions on how to use it, the best times to use it, best ways to use it. Ways that will give me minimal amount of pain. Yes, I’m chickenshit to pain when it comes to hair. Surprisingly, you can pull hair off my head and I won’t feel a thing, thanks to a bout of trichotillomania I had years ago (that’s a whole different story altogether, which I will tell you some day).

Both recommended I epilate on dry skin, and to begin with the legs. Alrighty, so I did. Warned my husband about any sounds he’d hear of me in the loo, and that I love him just in case I don’t make it. Drama queen, much? Of course.

Thank God, the epilating experience was all right. There was a slight stinging sensation on my legs and arms as I epilated, but it didn’t actually hurt. Since it was my first time, my skin became patches of red after epilation. That’s normal, and the user manual suggested I apply body moisturiser to soothe the skin and redness. I slapped on body cream and some aloe vera gel. The latter completely eased the stinging sensation, and the redness was gone the very next morning.

And for the first time in my life, I have fuzz-free arms and legs.

Cue “HALLELUJAH!”

Since I’ve never epilated before, I cannot compare the Silk-Epil 7 with other epilators. Still, I’m glad it was completely fuss-free, and gave me minimal pain the first time I tried it. After a while, epilating became a doozy. Here are some of my tips for a first-timer:
– Do it on dry skin. It gets to hair better, and you finish quicker.
– Shave the area first, and let it grow back up to 0.5mm before epilating. The Silk-Epil 7 comes with a shaver and trimmer that do the trimming for you if you don’t want to wait. I stupidly tried to epilate my arm hair untrimmed. It felt like pulling UHU or super glue off your skin. Yowza.
– Aloe vera gel is great for soothing the stinging sensation.
– Try on your legs and arms first, before you proceed to the underarm area. The underarms are more sensitive and it’s going to be painful the first time.
– Forget epilating “down there”, it hurts donkey balls.

All in all, I’m loving the epilator and my fuzz-free arms and legs, all in time for summer. Which made me wonder, why the heck did it take me so long to try epilating?!

Braun Silk-epil Xpressive 7681WD retails at AU$208.95 and is available at selected electrical outlets and major department stores.

*Aiyoh = a Malaysian exclamation.

What Do You Do With Unsuitable Skincare Products?

There are times when I would stumble upon beauty products that do not suit my skin type. Some would be given to me, some I stupidly purchased despite knowing it might not work, some I didn’t know wouldn’t work. These products would often break me out, or cause my skin to produce my sebum especially on the T-zone.

If the products come in jars, there’s no point in giving them away because I would have used my fingers to dig into the cream. Rather than leaving them to expire, I use them on my body.

Trilogy CoQ10 Booster Capsules with Tahitian Tamanu Oil
Too rich for my face. It’s now going on my arms and legs.

I’ve used face creams, eye creams, serums, facial sunscreen, etc on my body. Why waste good products, eh? The ones which are barely used, that come in tubes and bottles, I would give them away to friends if they would like them.

What about you? Do you use unsuitable skincare products on your body? Or do you give them away?

Stella McCartney For Target Launches Tomorrow

After all the advertisements and event reviews from selected Australian fashion bloggers, I’m sure you all know that Stella McCartney for Target is launching tomorrow, October 29 at selected Target stores.

Stella McCartney for Target October 2010

I can’t decide if I want to go for the launch at Chadstone or not. I read that the first launch of Stella McCartney for Target three years ago was a complete frenzy. Women were going all kinds of crazy in stores, queuing up the night before, lots of screaming and shouting, and whatnots. Plus I found myself slightly unwhelmed by the apparel. It could just be the model though. What’s a better word for, er, ugly?

Having said that, I do quite like this lace top (AU$129).

I’m still deciding. Is there anything from the collection that you’re eying? Who’s going for the launch? Perhaps I might tag along with you. I’ll bring my umbrella along in case anyone shoves us or cuts our line đŸ˜›

Clarins Daily Energizer Wake-Up Booster

Clarins Daily Energizer

The Clarins Daily Energizer range, for young women who have enviously eye their sibling’s or their mother’s Clarins products, is a breakthrough range that answers all their skin care needs. It specifically addresses the traditional concerns of young skin: shine, unevenness, small spots and signs of fatigue.

I have to admit, this was a spur-of-the-moment purchase. I saw this on Ponikuta, and after reading about her raving about this, I rushed out to get this the very next day.

Clarins Daily Energizer Wake-Up Booster

Description:

Your first morning beauty step to boost skin radiance. A refreshing cocktail of redcurrant, green coffee and white tea, Wake-Up Booster rehydrates and revitalizes, leaving skin looking bright and fresh.

I felt a little embarrassed purchasing this, because the Daily Energizer range was meant for young ladies in their teens to early twenties. I was a little red in the face when I sheepishly asked if this was okay for women in their late twenties (yes yes I know, I should have said thirties, but let’s not be specific). Surprise surprise, the sales assistant happily gushed “of course! No problem at all!”, in hopes for a sale. And I eagerly handed her my credit card đŸ˜›

Couldn’t see it “boosting” anything, but I do like using it during the day and night, after cleansing my face. I’ve read mixed reviews about this, especially on the scent, but for me, it was the scent that attracted me the most. It has the most delicious fruity smell, which I just adore. It’s refreshing and feels cool when applied on the skin (it contains alcohol), which is why I think they call it a “wake-up booster”. I’m normally against toners with alcohol, but dang if I’m not seduced wholly by the scent. Still, it doesn’t dry the skin out so I’m good with it.

Would I repurchase this? I think so, given that I’m in love with the scent. But we’ll see, shall we?

Next product to try out in the Daily Energizer range would be the Cream-Gel. Oh who cares if it’s for younger skin? My skin’s still *quite* supple and oily, which is what younger skin is about, right? I’m going to march up to the counter and tell the lady “see here, I’m 30, and I want the Daily Energizer range so don’t you give me any lip about me being too old for it!

Or something like that đŸ˜‰

Clarins Daily Energizer Wake-Up Booster retails at AU$30 for 125ml and is available at MYER, David Jones and selected pharmacies.

What I like about it: The delicious fruity smell won me ten times over.

What I do not like about it: It’s meant for younger skin, but if it works for me, who cares, right? Right? (Update: Forgot to add this to the review, but a boo point would be that it contains alcohol.)
