100 Things About Me: Past and Present

Browsing the archives of my personal blog (which I haven’t updated in over six months. Yikes), I came across a post, on a 100 things about me. I wrote that post back in 2005, when I was 25 years old. Going through that long list made me chuckle, and then it made me cry because of the long way I’ve come since then. So many things have changed, and I’m so blessed to say, for the better.

Fast forward six years, and here I am. 31 years old, doing things I never thought I’d be doing back when I was 25. So here’s my new list, although I don’t think I can think of 100 things, I reckon I should be able to do 50. Who knows what it’s going to be like 6 years down the road when I read this post again 🙂

25-Year-Old Me (this was the original post I wrote in 2005. Some details are useless, some quite embarrassing)

25 year old Tine

1. Loved ones call me Tine (pronounced Tin, not “Tain”).
2. I have a dog called Tiger. He’s named after my parents’ favourite golfer.
3. I love twiddling with my hair.
4. My mostly-used words are “S**t” (let’s keep it clean) and “bloody hell” (I’m sure there are more though).
5. I hate baked beans. Hate. Them.
6. I think Hugh Jackman’s very drool-worthy.
7. I wish I was a singer.

14. I love collecting postcards.
15. Ditto for bags.
16. I really need a shower right now.
17. My favourite umbrella is red, with a duck-shaped head. It was a gift from a dear friend. I hardly use it in case it gets damaged from the rain.

19. I hate bad surprises.
20. I cannot sleep without my little bolster which I have had since I was 8.

22. I hate having to wake up in the middle of the night to pee.
23. My favourite TV show is FRIENDS. I’ve watched all the episodes more than 10 times over.
24. I’m struggling to think of any more stuff about me to write (damnit, I’m only at #24!!).

27. I love the colour pink *blush*.
28. I have a bunch of wooden flowers in a vase on my desk, and I wonder what it is for.

Present-Day Me

31 Year Old Tine with Kelly Cutrone

Kicking it with Kelly Cutrone. Who knew?

1. I still love twiddling with my hair, although I don’t tug and yank it off anymore. I had a bout of trichotillomania back in the day.
2. I still hate baked beans. Always have, always will.
3. I used to hate celery with a vengeance (just as much as baked beans) till I came to Australia. I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but I love celery now, and have it in my fridge all the time.
4. I still think Hugh Jackman is very drool-worthy.
5. I know my blood type. It’s 0+.
6. My favourite TV show is Frasier. Haven’t watched FRIENDS in the past 5 years.
7. I know what to do with my life. Live it well.
8. I still have soft toys on my bed, but only two monkeys (representing the husband and I. We were born in the year of the Monkey). Can’t stand teddy bears anymore.
9. I’ve had full body checkups, including the uncomfortable pap smears and mammogram. Ugh.
10. I don’t have a PDA (who still uses one these days? Hands up if you do!), and don’t use a Filofax anymore. It’s all on the phone and Google Calendar. On the cloud, baby!
11. I still cheat at computer games.
12. I have to have music on when I sleep. Very softly played jazz, classical music or nature sounds lull me to sleep. I cannot sleep in full silence. It’s deafening.
13. I still haven’t won any contests.
14. My favourite alcoholic drink is an apple martini. I like my girly drinks.
15. I’d still love to go to Paris one day.
16. I wish I have a piano to perform. I miss it heaps.
17. My dog, Tiger, is still around (thank God), although he’s an old goggie now with white whiskers. 11 years old. Still walks my dad though.
18. I write a whole lot more now compared to before. And it’s not technical reports.
19. I still love Sex and the City, but only the series and part 1 of the movies. Part 2 stunk like bad milk.
20. My first crush indeed was Jason Donovan. Even my first non-celebrity crush’s name was Jason.
21. I CAN cook! This one’s a big deal for me. I was utterly rubbish before. First year of university, I had fried eggs and rice every day for a week because I didn’t know how to cook anything else. Now, I can safely say I do kick arse at it.
22. Having said #21, I still cannot bake. Bugger.
23. I love the smell of rain (take that #56, 25-year-old you!)
24. I used to have a weird need to please people (see 25-year-old me). Now, the need has subsided quite a lot. It’s still there, but I now know when to say NO.
25. I still cannot sleep without my little bolster. It’s a comfort thing.
26. My bedroom used to be my only domain. Now it’s that AND the kitchen.
27. I never knew I was good with my hands until I started making jewelry. Then again, I did have some arse-kicking soldering skills back in the day.
28. I used to be an electronics engineer. Hated every minute of my job.
29. The fine lines under my eyes were caused by my crappy mid-20s.
30. I like troubleshooting problems. It’s that engineer in me. I might be a cranky b***h in the meantime but when problems are solved, I couldn’t be happier.
31. Most of my friends now are known through my blog.
32. I can parallel park now. Reverse parallel-park. Oh yeah.
33. I never, ever thought I’d move to Australia. US or UK maybe, Singapore even, but never Australia.
34. I don’t watch Korean TV shows. My parents are completely hooked on them, I just don’t see the appeal.
35. I hate mopping the floor.
36. I also hate ironing.
37. Sometimes when I see a word, I run it many times in my mind until it becomes an unknown. I’m weird like that.
38. My home office looks like an explosion of beauty products. I have them on the desk, on the bookshelves, on the floor.
39. I’ve never drunk so much coffee in my life till I came to Australia.
40. Ah screw it, I can’t write 50 things. How the heck did I even do 100 back then?!

  2. Nikki

hahaahah I am so smiling and laughing at the same time when i read your post! It’s nice to read back and update your readers! Soooooo cute! I can’t sleep without music on though, I will be humming and trying to sing with it, yes..even instrumental! lol 🙂

I’m glad to know you better with this post! I can’t wait to get the chance to meet up with you in person 😀

    1. Tine

Nikki: I think it’s because growing up, my neighbourhood would be full of noise at night. It wasn’t noisy till I can’t sleep, but there will be sporadic barking from dogs, irritating alarms from cars, etc that just got me used to sleeping with those sounds. When I lived in Japan for over a year, it was so incredibly quiet that you can hear your ears ring. That was when I started living the music on my computer on, or the TV on. I couldn’t sleep without sound ever since.

You are the top person in my ‘really-must-meet’ list. I feel like we know each other for so long already, yet we’ve never met!

  3. yani

Hahahahahaah – what a delightful post! Fabulous way to describe the Tine everyone knows and love! 🙂

    1. Tine

Idaira: Death to the flying cockroaches! Oh death to all cockroaches, those miserable vermins!

Hmm I never thought of that. You could be right 🙂

  8. Lilian

I wish I had a piano too……I’m in Singapore. My piano is in Malaysia =(

    1. Tine

Lilian: Mine too. Funny, ‘cos I didn’t really like playing the piano when I had such easy access to it, but now that I don’t, I want to play again.

  9. beetrice

ooohh I remember doing this one back then after you did yours! :p gotta go dig that up too and see what’s changed…kekeke…

    1. Tine

Beetrice: I *may* have taken it from your blog back in the day. This means that the same amount of time would have lapsed for you. Go do one now! 😛

  10. domncroxd

    1. Tine

domncroxd: You said it, sistah! 😛

  11. Amanda

Happen to drop by while I am browsing on the net. I love this kind of list post. It’s downright interesting simply by reading it. Too bad that I didn’t have one when I was 25…

    1. Tine

Amanda: Well hello hello! It’s good to meet you 🙂 I completely forgot I even did this when I was 25. Good retrospective view, and what I’ve achieved today 🙂

  12. Me, my best and I

    SNAP on 6,9,11, 93!

    1. Tine

Me, my best and I: Yay I’m not the only one 😛

  13. Lilpil

It’s amazing how much we grow and change over time despite not realising it until we do a reflection isn’t it?

You’ve inspired me to write a list about myself too now – if only to re-read it in 10 years time to have a good laugh at myself 🙂

    Thanks Tine!

    1. Tine

Lilpil: My pleasure, Amy. I think everyone should do something like this. A time capsule, to be opened (or in this case, read) in 5-10 years. Even if we no longer blog by then, it’s good to know how far we’ve come 🙂

  14. elle

wow i wanna do a list like this too, and check back in a decade of meself ^^

    xoxo elle

    1. Tine

Elle: Do it do it do it do it! 😀
