Bloggie Wednesdays: Ask Me Anything!

Bloggie Wednesdays: Ask Me Anything!

Happy Hump Day, folks!

For those who celebrate Cup Day yesterday, how was it? Did you win any of the races? By the way, for those of you who aren’t clear about what Melbourne Cup Day is, it’s a public holiday for residents in Melbourne to celebrate horse racing for the Melbourne Cup. It baffled me when I first moved to Melbourne 5 years ago to find out that there literally is a public holiday for such an event! πŸ˜›

Anyway, it’s been almost 5 months since I last did an Ask Me Anything post on Bloggie Wednesdays so today, I thought I’d leave the comments open for any questions you have.

For those of you new to Beautyholics Anonymous, hello and welcome! If you’re not sure what Ask Me Anything is, well, the name says it all. Just ask me anything! If you have any questions about anything at all, whether it’s related to beauty, blogging, shopping, food or anything under the sun, just holler. If I’m able to help you out at all, I will. If not, let’s open it to the floor where other readers may be able to help you as well.

If you don’t have any questions, do drop in and say hi. How are you doing?

Me, I’ve been doing all right, I guess. There are some health issues that requires medical tests and all that but so far, there’s no real cause for concern yet. I’ll tell you more about it when the time comes. I’m expecting a guest in my home next week, which is super exciting. Again, will share more when the time is right. Gee, I’m all secretive today, aren’t I? πŸ˜›

Enough about me, over to you! Tell me anything. Ask me anything!

Bloggie Wednesdays is a series of articles just on blogging. They contain tips, how-tos, discussions about anything and everything you need to know about blogging and how we can be better bloggers. If you have any suggestions, tips and tricks about blogging you would like to share with us, or if you have any questions you would like me to address, please let us know in the comments.

Hi Tine…I just wanted to say hello. I really hope that all is well with you and all your medical tests go well…by the way, when I first went to Paris, I wasn’t too impressed either..the dog poo thing got to me…:)…but I think it’s all to do with expectations like you said…because after going back, I really loved it…Anyway, hope you are having a great day…

    1. Tine

Hello hello! Yeah, it’s the amount of expectations I had. Far too much built up over TEN years. I hope that some day I’ll be able to go back and will thoroughly fall in love with the city. I did almost step on a lot of dog poo πŸ˜›

My question: have you ever thought of meeting your readers?

I have, many times! I’ve never actually done a proper meet-up because I don’t know if it’s okay to say “Hey I wanna meet you, wanna meet me?”. I don’t know. Does that sound conceited like I’m so full of myself that people would want to meet me? Seriously, I’d love to meet up with my readers. I met a few one-on-one, which was absolutely lovely.

Hi Tine, I have a beauty question not a blogging question. What are the best creams/serums to reduce acne scarring? I have been using Bio-Oil but have just been informed it contained heaps of nasty chemicals in it. I have been using Vit E serum. I used to have quite bad acne and to be honest I am yet to find a “natural” product that actually works longterm. I have always have to use the heavy duty products-help!!

    1. Tine

      Hi Lisa,

I used Bio Oil on my scar after my breast lump removal surgery and have not had any issues. But if you’re worried about the ingredients, I’ve also tried Palmer’s Rosehip Skin Therapy Oil and it works just as well.

As I don’t have acne, I’m afraid I can’t recommend specific products that will target acne scarring. Do check out this post by Beauty Swatch as she wrote her recommendations for serums on acne scar reduction (they worked very well for her; I couldn’t even tell she used to suffer from acne!): http://beautyswatch.com/products-that-help-fade-acne-scars/

Sorry I’m no help there πŸ™

    Hi Tine
My sister in law is buying into Arbonne, wondering what you think of the product?
    thanks
    Roman
    ps Tim says hi!

    1. Tine

Hi Roman, I’ve only tried a couple of makeup products from Arbonne so I can’t give you definitive answer to what I think of all of the products. I’ve tried their liquid eyeliner which is pretty good. I’ve read a few negative reviews on their hardselling methods though so I’d say watch out for that. Other than that, why not try them out? πŸ™‚

you should totally do a meet up in Melbourne =D I want to meet you!
how do you go about finding your facialist/facial salon? after the post you did about bad face treatments im so paranoid now. and too many places are touting to win awards and use all natural products, but i don’t know how effective and non damaging they really are.

    1. Tine

Haha I want to meet you too! It’s funny how we’ve been conversing via comments, you know some of the evurl girls and we’ve never met! πŸ˜›

When I first moved to Australia, I was high on all those group discount websites, bought plenty of coupons, tried heaps of places (just ‘cos they were cheap after discount) and regretted most of them. For me, a good facial isn’t just about the results, it’s also paying for the experience. At least, that’s what I tell myself after seeing how much beauty treatments here cost! πŸ˜›

Anyway, there are a few places I’d recommend for facials:
      – Endota Spa (my favourite and the one I go to on an almost monthly basis). I’ve not tried the one in the city, only Chadstone and I’ve always been impressed with the results. My skin is super boing-boing after each facial (either Dermalogica or endota organic products) and their massages are amazing.
      – Allison Browning. My first experience with her was a complimentary one but I’ve gone back to her every now and then because she’s very good. She does microdermabrasion too.
      – Jurlique. I’ve been to the one in Melbourne Central and they’re good. The only thing I didn’t like was the location. It can be pretty noisy.

When it comes to facials, I would stick to the popular ones and not never-heard-before independent salons. They normally cost more but for that peace of mind, it’s worth the money.

      1. Ozlicious

In defence of little independent salons!

For what it’s worth, I’m a skincare therapist and I work in a small boutique salon and I daresay we give the best facials you’ll ever have! Because we aren’t in a shopping centre, we have the time to really do a good in-depth skin analysis, to spend time consulting with the client about what they really want from the treatment, and of course there’s time for a nice loooong facial massage and a proper amount of masque time! We also allow time to add on extras like ampoule treatments, eye treatments, eye lifting treatments (amazing!), etc. In a shopping centre or a bigger salon, it’s more like a production line. You’re paying for a one hour facial but you really only get 45 minutes in the treatment room. We always give you what you’ve paid for and indeed we aim to exceed that, every time!

We use three different skincare ranges – Guinot, Germaine de Capuccini, and Dermaquest. You can go as “pampering” (aromatherapy/long massages) or as “clinical” (peels, microdermabrasion) as you like. And we really try to find out what you want from the treatment. Do you want to relax? OK, I’ll turn the lights way down and we won’t chat too much about what you’re using at home. Do you want to get rid of your pigmentation? OK, we will include a skin clarifying ampoule in your treatment today, containing licorice, vitamin c, and marshmallow. And I’ll send you home with a serum containing niacinamide, melanostatine-5, and emblica! Are you concerned with anti ageing? We can do peptide facials…peels…lifting treatments…vitamin infusions…the list goes on!

We’re small, private, quiet, and you don’t have to walk into a shopping centre after your treatment! What’s not to love? πŸ™‚ We’re in North Queensland so not accessible to a lot of people — but I would encourage you to give more boutique salons a try. πŸ™‚

        1. Tine

Hahaha thanks for clearing that up! To be honest, most of the independent salons that I’ve experienced weren’t all that good which is why personally, I do stick with the big ones. But I haven’t written off the smaller salons yet, that’s for sure! And yeah, walking into a busy shopping centre with screaming kids after a relaxing facial/massage is definitely something I’d like to avoid if possible. πŸ˜›

No massive burning questions I’m afraid, but popping in to say Hi! πŸ™‚ I also have guests next week (my parents, haven’t seen them for 18 months), its exciting isn’t it! πŸ˜€ (well, my parents for me, and your guest for you – my parents probably don’t excite you all that much :P)

Anytime you come to Adelaide let me know and I’d love to meet up btw (I missed my chance when we came to Melbourne the other week because we were only going to be there for around 30 hours, so didn’t have a heap of time. We did get to the Pancake Palour though, which was AMAZING! πŸ˜€ I don’t care if it was kitsch, the pancakes were super yum. And we were tourists after all lol).

Hi Hilary! Thanks for dropping by to say hi!

Will definitely let you know when I’m in Adelaide. I’ve been wanting to visit Adelaide for ages! It’s been 5 years since I moved to Australia and I’ve never even been there. Tsk tsk.

Hahaha I’ll always have a soft spot for Pancake Parlour because it was the very first place my husband brought me to when I visited him and Australia for the first time. So kitsch be damned; it’s GREAT! πŸ˜€

      1. Hilary

Hurrah, I’m not such a dorky tourist then with the pancakes πŸ˜€ Super great indeed (and I really have to visit our local take on it here in Adelaide at some point too, no excuses really seeing as its open 24/7!)

We love Adelaide, but then after nearly 15 years in London, its nice and relaxed and slower paced just like we need now – Melbourne was good for a visit, but Adelaide is where its at for a nice relaxed life for us πŸ™‚

PS hope the GA goes ok – I remember coming around from my one and only time under, muttering about pets and boyfriends kept in cages. They thought I was quite loopy!

Hahahaha what it must have been like for people to hear about your pets and boyfriends in cages! I was under GA once when I had my breast lump removal surgery a couple of years ago. It was my first time on GA and all I remembered was this tingling sensation hitting my toes and going all the way to my head very quickly. I had the best sleep ever and was quite disappointed when the nurse woke me up! πŸ˜›

  9. Victoria

hi tine! was actually wondering when this post would come up. lol. i do hope your medical tests went well.

i guess one question to ask if what kind of brush do you use with your guerlain meteorites or berbolas (i love this term you use, hahaha) and how do you use hydraluron and does it actually help to plump your face and keep it hydrated like what caroline hirons said?

    1. Tine

Hahaha hi hi V! There’s one more test to do which I have to go under GA for in a couple of weeks. Will know more and share with the blog by then πŸ™‚

Those are bebolas, no matter how Guerlain try to glam it up with the word Meteorites πŸ˜‰ Okay to answer your Qs:
      1. For the bebolas, I use my Hakuhodo face brush. It’s a very fluffy one, not dense at all. I find that it gives an all round glow without adding on too much shimmer as denser brushes do.
      2. For the Hydraluron, I use in under my serum. So it’s toner/lotion, Hydraluron, serum, eye cream, moisturiser. I find that it helps my serum to absorb better.

  10. Jane

    Hi,
I have a problem with some foundations or Bb creams when they seem to react with the primer or moisturoser I’ve used – the foundation sort of ‘balls’ up or peels, leaving ‘bits’ of foundation on my face. It is something I have found to be really difficult to research as it is hard to describe. I think it is something to do with an incompatibility between water based foundation and oil based moisturiser or maybe the problem is the silicone???? Can you throw any light on this?? And also, how do you tell if a product is water or oil based? Does ‘aqua’ in the ingredient based mean there’s no oil?

    1. Tine

      Hi Jane,

Thanks for your question and it’s a good one because I experience that too with a number of foundations and BB creams. I’m afraid I’m stumped as well. I thought it would be an incompatibility with water and oil based products but it can’t be because 1) I don’t face the same problem every time and 2) I don’t use oil-based moisturisers or serums (the only oil-based skincare product I use are oil cleansers). The same foundation that balls up on me today may not do it tomorrow. There’s no change in my skincare routine. It annoys me big time because not many people experience the same thing with the same foundation or BB cream. I’m afraid it’s something I can’t explain either and am still looking for answers like you are. Sorry I’m no help there.

As for water or oil-based, if the ingredients mention aqua in it, especially the first or second ingredient in the list, then it’s water-based. It’s not necessarily the case that both cannot exist in the same ingredients list. E.g. bi-phase makeup removers will have water and oil in it. Check for glycerin; it’s an oil used in heaps of skincare products.

Here’s a good link to check out about water and oil-based products and how they work: http://health.howstuffworks.com/skin-care/moisturizing/products/creams-and-lotions-different.htm

Hi Tine! Glad to hear that you are doing good! Anyway must take good care of your health ya! Tine, I’m thinking to try Dior skincare products but it’s quite an expensive skincare brand . I would like to seek advice from you regarding this brand. What do you think Tine? I heard lots if good raves from EstΓ©e Lauder advanced night repair concentrate serum. Is it suitable for 25 years old skin?

    1. Tine

The ANR works for 25yo skin. I started using the original formula years ago when I was about that age and didn’t have any issues with it. I stopped only because I got distracted by other skincare products.

As for Dior, I’ve only tried the makeup. I do have a Diorsnow moisturiser but haven’t started using it yet. I tried out some in store and realised that it’s actually quite heavily scented (especially that Diorsnow moisturiser). Paris B highly recommends the Capture Totale range if you’re interested in checking it out.

    oh i missed it..:(

    1. Tine

Haha don’t worry about it Anusha, you can ask at any time!
