Nailing It – There Ain’t No Summertime Blues with Essie. Well, Mostly Not

Essie Bottle Service, Shake Your $$ Maker, DJ Play That Song, Saturday Disco Fever

I was wondering whether to call this a Nailing It or Not Nailing It because one of the nail polishes just didn’t work for me. Oh well, since it’s just 1 out of 4 … okay, nailing it! πŸ˜›

Just thought I’d show you 4 bright nail polishes from Essie today that are spot on for summer. I really like how the colours pop when the bottles are lined up like that. Can you imagine wearing all of these colours at once? On your clothes, I mean? Colour blocking FTW!

Essie Bottle Service, Shake Your $$ Maker, DJ Play That Song, Saturday Disco Fever

So pin-worthy, right? *hint hint wink wink nudge nudge*

Saturday Disco Fever: Bright, bright orange. Beautiful formula, this one. Just 2 coats will do to achieve opacity. Looks almost fluoroscent in the bottle but it’s not. Still, it made my hands look quite tanned.

Shake Your $$ Maker: This was the one that I didn’t like at all. It’s a boring green that doesn’t pop nor stand out. I found the formula so watery and the results so sheer. I applied 3 coats in the photos and you can still see the white bits of my nails. Again, the colour … I don’t know how to describe it. Looks so pretty in the bottle, but on the nails … meh.

DJ Play That Song: A sweet purple that has more red tones than blue. The colour is pretty but not something I’d wear often.

Bottle Service: Hot Barbie pink. Best formula out of the 4 nail polishes. One coat is enough to achieve opacity although I did apply 2 coats for the photos.

Out of the 4, my favourite would be the hot pink Bottle Service. It may be summer but I still tend to wear a lot of black all year round so this will be a great pop of colour on my nails.

Have you tried any of these colours before? If you can only have ONE nail polish (excluding base and top coats), what would it be?

Haven’t actually tried Essie yet, mainly due to mixed reports on how good or not it actually is (ie chipping etc) and the fact it just has that air of ‘Emperor’s new clothes’ about it for me (ie lots of hype, whether or not its actually any good, just because its ‘cult’).

I luuuurrrrve my OPI and sadly a retired to the nail polish heaven clouds shade called ‘Russian to a Par-ty’ was the best *ever*. It was a really rich burgandy type red, shot through with gold, but you couldn’t really see the gold it just enhanced the red. God I loved that shade. Sob. One day I’ll find a load of old stock somewhere and be able to wear it again. In the meantime I can get super excited about the Gwen Steffani range coming in Jan – woop woop! πŸ™‚

Ahhh see that’s the thing. Essie has a lot of hits and misses when it comes to their formula. They’re not uniform! I’ve tried a lot of Essie nail polishes and most of them have runny formula or they chip very easily. I find that the green nail polish (Shake Your $$ Maker) like that. Strangely, the rest, especially the pink one, are good! Very odd!

A rich burgundy type red you say? Check out OPI’s Malaga Wine. OMG it’s gorgeous.

OK – I have a confession. My name is Hilary, and I’m a nail-a-holic. Ahem. At last count my OPI collection was over 100 bottles strong. And that doesn’t include the approx. 100 I sold before we moved as my husband said I was only allowed to ship what I could fit in my nail varnish flight case. Ahem.

SO glad I shipped mainly make up, toiletries and nail varnishes when we moved over (who needs kitchen utensils, or a bed to sleep on etc? tsk!), I have a massive stash of things you can’t get in Oz (notably, ‘Aussie’ brand hair stuff, which is sold in the UK but not Australia. Go figure), which will keep me going for a while. Apart from the nail varnish as OPI just keep bringing out lovely new ranges. Damn them!

One hundred bottles?! Where’s my hat? I need to take it off to you right now. πŸ˜›

About that Aussie brand hair stuff, it’s so so weird that it’s not sold here! I remembered seeing a lot of it when I was studying in the UK years ago. I saw it in the US too. Apparently it’s an Aussie brand but we can’t have it. Odd πŸ˜›

OPI here is 20 bucks. 20 BUCKS!!! >.<

I’m not a nail polish girl but these are gorgeous! I have just one Essie nail polish, with lots of China Glaze and a few of OPI. Currently I’m liking matte nail polish #That’s Shore Bright from China Glaze Neon Color Range. I guess that’s the nail polish that I want to have if I can only have one cause I can skip top coat lol. Yay for lazy bum πŸ˜€

Hahaha you’ve got a good point there. One less thing to do! πŸ˜€

I’m usually a sucker for green nail polishes, but that one doesn’t look that good. It’s just weird. Bottle Service instead looks gorgeous!

I think I like Saturday Disco Fever among the four! These colors are perfect for summer indeed!
