Cellnique Pro Sebum Gel Rebranded to B-Liv by Cellniq

    Posted by Tine | February 17, 2009

When I went to Sasa to stock up on my usual daily dose of Cellnique’s Pro Sebum Gel, I was surprised to find that it was no longer available. There I was, looking all over for the bright pink box (that was how it was packaged), but to no avail. When I asked the sales assistant if they’ve stopped stocking the product, that was when I found out that Cellnique had actually renamed and repackaged the Pro Sebum Gel under the brand B-Liv by Cellniq.

    B-Liv Skincare

Just to be sure, I contacted Cellnique regarding this rebranding. A few weeks later, I received a reply from Ms Joey Chin, a Cellnique representative. She has kindly allowed me to quote her reply here.

Our Pro Sebum Gel has been re-packaged under b.liv by cellniq. It was an exercise which we had planned since Jan 08. The reason behind the re-branding is because we have done some researches & found out that the youngsters nowadays, like something fun, even for their skin care products. Hence, we have re-vamped the whole brand to suit to their requirements.

We have also found out that they (what we called the Gen-Yers) like something easy to use, do not require much hassle & saves time. Hence, we have developed a range of products that only have 2 steps: cleanse & treat. If you notice, all of our products only have 2 steps. Currently, we have 4 range of products:

    1. Hydration range (Blue)
    a) Drench Me – cleanser
    b) Quench Me – moisturizer for hydration

    2. Comedone Reducing (Orange)
    a) Squeaky Clean – cleanser
    b) Off With Those Heads – treatment for black/white heads
    c) Got Me Covered – a complementary product. It is our sun-block + natural foundation that acts like a make-up base

    3. Pore Reducing (Purple)
    a) Glow & Shine – weekly masque that has triple function: deep cleanse + brightening + cell renewal
    b) Shrink & Tighten – a complementary product for open pores

    4. Blemish Control (Pink)
    a) No Spots Bye Dots – cleanser
    b) Spots Got Shot – treatment gel for spots

So there you go. The Pro Sebum Gel was simply repackaged and renamed to B-Liv Off With Those Heads Pro Sebum Gel.

B-Liv Off With Those Heads Front

B-Liv Off With Those Heads Back

B-Liv Off With Those Heads Bottle

Although I have to say, I wasn’t at all keen on the rebranding though. Even though the objective of the rebranding was aimed at appealing to the younger generation, I couldn’t help but wonder if they’ve taken a step too far into somehow downgrading the outlook of the product.

    Cellnique Pro Sebum Gel
The original Pro Sebum Gel came in a pink plastic box. This was another version in packaging.

    Comparison between Cellnique and B-Liv

Methinks the original packaging looked a whole lot better, and classier too. Cellnique is not a very popular skincare brand, and the products aren’t cheap. The Pro Sebum Gel costs RM139 per bottle in the original packaging. The rebranded B-Liv Off With Those Heads costs the same. If I’ve never heard of Cellnique’s Pro Series range before, and see it on the shelves of Sasa, I might be swayed to give it a go despite the hefty price tag on an unknown product.

However, when I saw B-Liv, the range looked as though it was targeted more towards teenagers. And teenagers would hardly pay RM139 for a single piece of skincare product. The bottles looked plasticky, resembled sunscreen bottles and looked as though they belonged in a drugstore. It’s definitely not something I’d pay that much for at first glance.

I’m disappointed at the change. Even though I will continue to buy B-Liv’s Pro Sebum Gel as it works very well for me in controlling pimple outbreaks, somehow I feel shortchanged :(

Bring back the long cylindrical bottle and pink box!

I’ve only tried samples of the pro sebum gel. a friend of mine who is an avid user says that the ones that you get from the beauty salons are more ‘original’ and more effective compared to the pharmacy ones. They’re simply called “sebum gel” as opposed to “pro sebum gel”. perhaps you could look into that next time. It comes in the more classy bottle :)

Although the original packing is classier but the new packagings’ name are more fun.

Yeah I do agree with you about the price issue. I would really like to buy the products but damn I can find better substitutes.

I have never heard about this brand but you are right, the old packaging is classier, actually as long as the product works and nothing changed, packaging isn’t as important :)

the old packaging definitely looks a whole lot better. the new one looks so ciplak!

I totally agree. Even the Pharmaceutical range, skin Action sebum gel had a new packaging. I prefer the old packaging as well.

The old packaging is the same as that of pro-sebum gel. But the new one is shorter, fatter, and less classier. *sigh* I was so shocked when I received the new range.

Ooh thanks for the heads up. I had no idea it was the same line, I didn’t bother reading the fine print. Sasa sales girls seriously bug me. I’ll BITE one, one day!

I really wish I could sample this before I buy it. I’m terrified its another dimethicone based serum that will cause me to burst into pimples. =(

ITA too! i wouldn’t pay S$70 for a teeny-bopper looking skincare product. besides, if cellnique wants to target the teens, then what are they doing pricing their products THAT high?

I thought the same thing! I’ve run out of mine but I’ve been procrastinating from buying it again just because of the packaging. I will buy it but…bleh.

no wonder i cannot find it at sasa. seems it changed to outlook and name. what a shame, so ugly packaging. down grade at all. stop my desire to buy it. Cellnique HQ, are u all nuts? Nowaday everyone go for trendy and classy, but u back to the dumb and stupid look! i can only say your research is redundant, and i bet u will not get the revenue as u got before. Wake Up pls! u will ruin the brand! Protest!

Forgot to mention that I’ll be letting go of the old stock (yes, the pink boxes) at 25% discount of the shelf price. :)

Have been receiving e-mails enquiring about the condition of the items. Just to clarify, the items are brand new, and still has its original seal on. Thanks all. :)

I found out the original Pro Sebum Gel made in USA and B.liv Pro Sebum gel made in Sinagpore. But prized the same. It seem missleading us, we paid the prize for a SG product now instead of a USA product.

Is that really a fair deal???

Anyone aware this change and misleading ????
