Estee Lauder Modern Mercury Pure Color Liquid Eyeliner in Graphite

There’s one item of makeup which I almost never wear, and that is liquid eyeliner. It’s funny because I used to be damn good at art back in the day, and can paint a thin straight line with a nylon brush with the precision and steady hands of a surgeon. But when it comes to drawing a fine, accurate line on my perimeter of my eyes, I’m absolute rubbish. My hands would shake, and I would almost always end up with ugly, jagged lines that I have to get rid off with makeup remover.

It’s an envy of mine to see ladies who can effortlessly create the winged tip ala Taylor Swift, because it’s something I couldn’t achieve with most of the liquid eyeliners I’ve tried. That is, until I discovered Estee Lauder’s Modern Mercury Pure Colour Liquid Eyeliner.

I was given the opportunity to trial the eyeliner in Graphite, and I have to say, this really is an idiotproof pen. It has a densely packed, pointed brush which makes lining of the eyes so easy. Most liquid eyeliners I’ve used have thin, flimsy brushes that do not give me enough control. This eyeliner does, and allows me to draw a fine line without any jagged edges.

The Graphite is a beautiful, shimmery charcoal. I prefer this to black liquid liners as I find the black ones too harsh. This pretty charcoal is just nice for me. It’s also very long-lasting. I have just about the oiliest eyelids, but this baby stuck to my skin like super glue for hours.

Excuse the awful colour of the photo. Photos were taken at night, in the study with poor lighting.

Yikes, please forgive the shiny nose. It was a long day. Foundation’s a bit shonky (can’t really remember which one I wore that night), but the eyeliner still hung on.

As lovely as the colour is, and easy to apply, it is a huge pain in the behind to remove. It’s not the usual ink which you can just wipe off with eye makeup remover in a swipe. It reminds me of Blinc’s Tube Mascara (formerly known as Kiss Me mascara), where it comes off in flakes. Oil-based makeup removers wouldn’t work for this; you’d need the regular watery ones. I’ve had minute bits of flakes in my eye one too many times, which I had to manually remove with my fingers. Fingers. In my eyes. Gross, I know.

Since it’s not an easy feat to remove, and I don’t want to tug at the delicate skin below my eyes any more than I should, I save this liquid eyeliner for special occasions. I’m just relieved that I’ve finally found a liquid eyeliner that I could actually use!

Uh-oh, another item added into my *to buy* list.

That bronzy coloured one on the right looks amazing. Perfect for the bottom line too oooo thanks for this 🙂 x

Heartofpearl: I’m thinking of getting the bronzy one too! Methinks the black is still too harsh for me, but the bronzy one would be lovely. Yep, like you, I’m adding that to my “to buy” list 😛

it reminds me one of the eyeliners that Red Earth used to have…the tip is perfect, not over thin and not pokey. and now they have either discontinued or not available anymore in msia 🙁 i can never find an eyeliner like it anymore

Xin: Aww it sucks big time when a good piece of makeup that you swear by gets discontinued 🙁 Let me know which one that is, I’ll see if I can get it here.

Haven’t gone to look at this but I like that last pic of you 🙂 I’m presently liking the Maybelline Hypersharp liner – cheap, does the job and stays all day 😀

I recommend the Kate Super Sharp eyeliner, it is like a felt tip texta and very easy to use. (I’m terrible at liquid eyeliner too).

Sara: Thanks for the recommendation, Sara. I’m not sure if Kate is available in Melbourne. I’ll check the small beauty boutiques at Chinatown for this 🙂

I can only use liquid eyeliners that come in a pen shape. I’m hopeless with liquid eyeliners that come with that Estee Lauder type of packaging >_<

I'm a huge fan of eyeliners, and have tried a lot of different types of eyeliners from different brands- pencil, liquid, gel, Guerlain, Estee Lauder, Dior, Chanel, MAC, KATE, Jordana, Urban Decay, empro, etc… and my favourite of all is Kiss Me Heavy Rotation liquid eyeliner 😀 It's black, easy to use, long-lasting (I cried through it and had it on for more than 12 hours) and easy to remove with eye make-up remover/cleansing oil, though if you rub your eye really hard it goes away but doesn't smudge.

KATE comes in pretty close to me too, but I find it not black enough for me- I always have to draw several lines to get a decent black line, so yeah.

Oh and it’s cheap, here it’s about <RM 50 though sometimes you can get a discount 😀

Stephanie/Yukaeshi: Pen, pen…ahh would it be sometime like crayons? I’ve heard a great deal about the Kiss Me liquid eyeliner, which I’m highly intrigued about. Liquid eyeliners are still something I’m struggling with, regardless of how sturdy it’s built 🙁

        1. Stephanie/Yukaeshi

Hmm it’s kind of like the Smashbox one- kind of like this one: http://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/smashbox-limitless-liquid-liner-pen-5.jpg

Only that the tip of the Kiss Me Heavy Rotation liquid eyeliner is not a felt-like tip but is more like a brush- Smashbox’s tip hurts my eyes >_< The Kiss Me eyeliner was actually a random purchase, but I'm glad I bought it- I'm hooked! @_@ I struggle with liquid eyeliner too… all except the Kiss Me one for some reason 🙁 Can't use any other liquid eyeliner now haha 😛

This looks like a really nice product, I’ve only just gotten into liquid liners so would love to try another colour out. Crazy messy to remove though, wow!

    Great post x

Emmbovary: Thanks Emma. This one’s lovely, but really terrible in terms of removal. For special occasions, this is a good one. Everyday use? Naaah. Too glittery and too much unnecessary tugging of the delicate eye area if you ask me.

That’s a gorgeous shade! I have trouble applying liquid eyeliners, but this sounds really fool-proof. Too bad it is so hard to remove though!

Gio: It is a gorgeous shade and so easy to apply. But I cringe at the thought of removing it because I know it’s sure to flake and some of the bits will definitely get in my eyes 🙁 Oh the price of beauty!

  8. Nadia

You’re so right! This is an idiot proof liquid liner. LOL! I am loving this eyeliner too. The one I got was in Black Quartz – amazing colour as well. Graphite’s bronzey shade looks fab on you!!

    1. Tine

Nadia: How’s the black? Is it harsh? Then again you have gorgeous eyes with eyelashes to die for, so I reckon it would still look fab on you 😉
