I’m not typically a fan of matte lipsticks but I’ll make an exception with these beautiful Shanghai Suzy matte lipsticks because they sure are lovely. Matte lipsticks are usually quite drying on the lips and worse, they emphasise the fine lines of the lips. Not these Shanghai Suzy lippies; at least, not most of them.
I had the opportunity to try 4 shades out from the range.
- Miss Maxima Burnt Orange: Orange-toned red (more red than orange). Actually, I’d say the shade is exactly the name of the lipstick – it’s burnt orange!
- Miss Sarah-Jane Neon Coral: Very bright coral, almost neon. Unfortunately, this shade isn’t my cup of tea at all. It’s also the only one that exacerbates the fine lines of my lips.
- Miss Tegan Cherry: Blue-toned red. It’s your classic, sophisticated red that makes the teeth look whiter than they are. You’ll need a lip liner with this though because it tends to bleed outside the lip line but definitely worth the extra effort because it’s such a beautiful red.
- Miss Melissa Hot Pink: Bright fuchsia pink. This is my favourite shade of the lot. I prefer this not to look perfectly done so I blot it a few times to make it look like a matte stain. The lips are still a bright pink but not glossy. Love it!
They’ve very creamy and glide on the lips smoothly. You know how some matte lipsticks would drag across the lips as though they’re gliding and skipping over bumps? Not these. These are buttery smooth and soft.
In terms of colour payoff, boy do these pack a punch. Celebrity makeup artist Rae Morris used to say, a good lipstick only needs one swipe to show good opacity on the lips. That’s how it is with these matte lippies.
Even though I don’t really like the Neon Coral, the rest really are very beautiful. I’m very impressed at how good the quality of these lipsticks are coming from a relatively new brand. They’re comparable to many high-end lipsticks; heck, they’re better than a lot of expensive ones I’ve tried.
