Splurge vs Steal: SUQQU Eyebrow Liquid Pen and Soap and Glory’s Archery

Splurge vs Steal: SUQQU Eyebrow Liquid Pen and Soap and Glory's Archery

If you watch Lisa Eldridge‘s YouTube videos (if you don’t, go subscribe now!), you’ll notice she uses the SUQQU Eyebrow Liquid Pen frequently on herself, her models and her clients. I’ve been very curious about that eyebrow pen for as long as I’ve watched her videos but I can’t get SUQQU in Australia so that’s a notion I had to give up.

But not for long! Luckily I remembered about the Eyebrow Liquid Pen when I was in Japan so I made sure to pick one up. It comes in 2 shades, Moss Green and Brown. Initially I didn’t know the name of the colours nor which shade suited me so I checked with the sales assistant. I chose the one with the darker shade that leaned closer to charcoal grey that suited my hair colour (the other one is a slightly lighter brown). When I asked her what shade the darker one was, she said it was Moss Green. I know! Green for eyebrows?!

It’s actually not green but a dark charcoal grey. I’m baffled as to why they call it Moss Green because surely this will confuse online shoppers who do not get to see the eyebrow pen in action.

There are two things I find fascinating about the SUQQU eyebrow pen:

  1. It’s very, very light. You might think that the eyebrow “ink” has dried out in the pen because unless you press hard and draw on the same spot over and over, you’ll barely see any ink. Initially I thought I bought a dud and that the ink had dried because there I was, drawing on the back of my hand and there was barely any product!
  2. It’s the most smudgeproof eyebrow product I’ve ever used. I rubbed the hell out of that back-of-the-hand swatch and nothing came out. There was absolutely no smudging at all.

I think it was a very good idea for the eyebrow pen to be so light because when you use feathery strokes on sparse eyebrows, you won’t make the mistake of making your eyebrows too dark and unnatural. Essentially, what you do with the pen is to draw individual hairs in. The results are full yet very natural-looking brows. You won’t run the risk of harsh lines unless you purposely fill them in that way.

After using this a few times, I find that I don’t really need this eyebrow pen as I do have full brows. I usually just use Benefit’s Gimme Brow for a quick filling-in of the brows and Hourglass’ Brow Sculpting Pencil if I want a more defined shape. However, the SUQQU Eyebrow Pen will be perfect for makeup beginners with sparse brows because you just can’t get it wrong. It’s so light and easy to use that it’s almost foolproof.

Having said that, SUQQU’s Eyebrow Pen is pretty expensive especially for those just dipping their toes in makeup (RRP 3240 yen in Japan or £20 in the UK. Approximately AU$34 to AU$37). A cheaper alternative would be Soap and Glory’s Archery Brow Tint & Precision Shaping Pencil (RRP £10, approximate AU$18) that has a similar felt-tip and will also give you pretty much the same results. The Archery pen is equally smudgeproof (the only way to remove it is with makeup remover. It’s difficult to remove with just water alone unless you rub hard). The shades are also quite similar, it also goes on light (although not quite as light as SUQQU’s) and is very easy to use. The Archery Pen also comes with a wax pencil on the other hand to keep the brow in place, a feature that the SUQQU Eyebrow Pen does not have.

For a makeup beginner or lover on a budget, I highly recommend the Soap and Glory Archery Pen because you get the same results as the more expensive alternative. However, if you’re looking to splurge on a brow product, then do check out SUQQU’s Eyebrow Liquid Pen because you will not be disappointed. Again, it does draw on a very light so do bear that in mind lest you think you bought a dried out pen.

Unfortunately you can’t get SUQQU nor Soap and Glory makeup in Australia which is a huge bummer. SUQQU is available at Selfridges in the UK (ships to Australia) and Soap and Glory is available at Boots. Sigh, why can’t we also get the good stuff here?

OK, I”m loving how smudge-proof this is. Have you tried the eyeliner? as smudgeproof? 😛

SUQQU’s eyeliner? Nah, only the eyebrow pen. Oh yeah, it’s smudgeproof all right. You’ll need to remove it with a proper makeup remover. Micellar water doesn’t cut it either. 😛

I’ve been wanting Soap and Glory Archery Pen so bad! Sephora Malaysia doesn’t carry the makeup line 🙁 . My other alternative is Stila and that cost more. The shade Dark is out of stock for the longest time. I ended up buying Eyeko Eyebrow Gel since Eyeko is on my wish list as well and the brand just arrived Sephora last week. Not quite an eyebrow pen but that will do for now 😀

We can’t get the makeup line either. In fact, I don’t think US gets it too. So far only the UK is stocking the entire makeup line. I’ve seen the Eyeko one many times at Kit Cosmetics but haven’t tried that out yet. Is it good? How does it compare the Benefit’s Gimme Brow? I love that one. 🙂

Both the pens look pretty awesome! Love a good brow product that is smudgeproof and doesn’t require brushes. Unlike you, my brows are quite light and need a bit of work to define them and it seems like this pen would work rather well in making brows look natural without looking like you’ve drawn them in. It’s such a shame we can’t get them in Australia. Wonder why Kit Cosmetics or Mecca doesn’t stock them?

I have absolutely no idea. You can’t get Soap and Glory’s makeup line in the US either. So far, if I’m not mistaken only the UK is stocking the entire makeup line. Have you tried Benefit’s Gimme Brow? It makes brows look very natural.

I use the SmashBox Brow tech trio .. it has the wax and two brow shades and is compact. Only annoyance is that it needs a brush for application .. so I’ve been looking for an eye brown pen of sorts. I tried on from Milani and it was meh. May have to look into the Soap and Glory pen .. 🙂

Ah I’ve tried a similar brow compact but yeah, like you, I prefer not to have to use a brush. A pen or mascara-like brush is the way to go for me! 😀

Massively MASSIVELY recommend Smashbox’s Brow Tech to Go pencil thingy. Absolutely perfect waxy slanted nib bit, perfectly lovely clear gel wand the other, which over time picks up colour from your brows (as you’ve just coloured/shaped/etc them with the other end) and means on those ultra quick make up times (like before work) or when you want a subtle hint of a tint, but don’t want to leave brows bare (as that is SO aging ladies!), a quick swipe of just the gel wand means subtle defined colour without the hassle of missing your browline (which happens in a hurry. And means people look at you odd as you have a double brow where its’ escaped you a bit….ahem). Its very subtle either way I find – for evenings I top up with my MAC reddish brow pencil as I dyed my hair quite dark burgundy reddy browny colour so for ‘going out’ I need something a bit more dramatic – my natural colour suits either colour of Smashbox to be honest, and when I have peroxide white hair the lighter shade does ok (to be fair, when you’ve got hair a very weird colour, anything strains to look natural on your face as well lol).

Has made my make up and go routine a lot shorter, plus it travels very well indeed. The only issue is you can only get it from Kit, which we don’t have in Adelaide (BOO), so that sucks (they do mail order, but its not the same).

Haha thanks for the recommendation! I’ve added the Brow Tech To Go to my to-check-out list since we *ahem* do have a Kit here. 😛
