Falling in Love with Cleansing Balms: Eve Lom and Antipodes

I’m a religious double cleanser. If I have makeup or even just sunscreen on during the day, then double-cleansing with an oil cleanser is a must for me. It’s not that I don’t trust my cleanser (okay, I don’t trust my cleanser), but I find the act of removing foundation with an oil cleanser, especially when seeing the ick come off my face, particularly cathartic. I even decant cleansing oils into small bottles for travelling (always have to double bag it as my Shu Uemura one leaked a couple of times. Oil in bag, EEEYYUUCCK!).

Eve Lom Cleanser and Antipodes Grapeseed Butter Cleanser

As I’ve been using liquid oil cleansers for so long, it didn’t come across my mind to try something new. I’ve seen cleansing balms around but never took to them because when I tested one out at the beauty counters (I think the one I tested was Clinique’s Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm), it was thick and heavy. I didn’t like the texture at all. I tested the popular Eve Lom cleansing balm at Mecca Cosmetica. Ugh, so thick and oily! Nope, not trying it at all.

Well, that was until Paris B came to Melbourne and stayed a few nights at my place. I saw her small jar of Eve Lom cleanser on the sink and had to ask her just how the heck she used it because I found it so thick and oily. She taught me the way she used the cleansing balm and it was the best method she found that worked very well for her. I don’t have a muslin cloth but it was okay because she found that a face washer towel worked better than a muslin cloth. Bless her, she left that Eve Lom jar for me to try out when she left Melbourne.

I tried it out and oh my, I’m a convert. I really am.

See, it goes to show that just checking it out and drawing conclusions based on that alone don’t always work. You have to learn how to bloody use it! πŸ˜›

Eve Lom Cleanser and Antipodes Grapeseed Butter Cleanser

As Eve Lom’s cleanser is crazy expensive, Paris B also recommended a cheaper alternative, and that’s the Antipodes Grapeseed Butter Cleanser. Since I’ve only started using that small jar of Eve Lom cleanser and already absolutely loved it, I decided to get the Antipodes one to try out too just to save the Eve Lom one for future travels.

Looking at the two of them, the surface of the balms look pretty darn similar. Both have tiny beads and they feel quite similar to the touch. When you first apply the Eve Lom balm on your skin and massage it in, the beads don’t disappear. They actually still stay on the skin. The ones in the Antipodes balm disappear as you apply it on the skin.

Eve Lom Cleanser and Antipodes Grapeseed Butter Cleanser

Both are good. I achieved the same results after cleansing my skin with the balms and that’s super soft and clean skin. The Antipodes one is slightly oilier and does dissolve onto the skin like cleansing oils do whereas the Eve Lom one’s feels slightly grittier when it’s on the skin. In terms of achieving clean skin, I actually prefer Eve Lom’s cleanser because the Antipodes ones does leave a hint of oiliness on the skin. I still use a regular cleanser after that (even when I used Eve Lom’s) so it wasn’t an issue for me.

The only issue is the price difference. Eve Lom’s cleanser costs AU$115 for 100ml whereas you can get a 75g jar of the Antipodes cleanser for AU$46. As much as I’d love a full-sized jar of the Eve Lom cleanser, I’m sticking to the one by Antipodes for now as it gives me the same results anyway.

Oh, I forgot to tell you how I use this! Duh! *facepalm*

Cleansing my face with a cleansing balm

For both cleansing balms, I used the same method that Paris B taught me:

  1. Apply cleansing balm on the face. You don’t need a lot. Massage the balm onto the skin. You’ll see the balm lifting the muck off your face (mine turns beige!).
  2. Run your face washer in hot water and squeeze dry.
  3. Put the towel on your face and gently press in. Do not wipe your face, just press the towel in gently around the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin.
  4. When you remove the towel, you’ll see your foundation on it. Quite gross but man, it feels good seeing it come off.
  5. Rinse your face washer, run in under hot water again, squeeze dry and place it on your face again. Don’t wipe your face; again, just gently press in.
  6. The third time you do this, gently wipe all of the gunk off.
  7. Hey presto! Clean and super soft skin, thanks to the balm and exfoliation from the face washer.

Cleansing my face with a cleansing balm

Granted, it’s a lot more work than just using good ol’ cleansing oil so I may or may not do this on a daily basis, depending on my laziness factor. But I’m definitely doing this at least twice a week because the hot towel and exfoliation of the skin feel really good. It’s certainly a method to pamper yourself, don’t you think? πŸ™‚

Cleansing balms are definitely more travel-friendly. I wouldn’t have to worry about exploding oil all over my toiletries bag, that’s for sure. When I’ve finished the Eve Lom cleanser, I’ll be scooping some of the Antipodes one in there since the jar is small and easy to pack.

When I’m done with the Antipodes cleansing balm, I’m going to check out the Clinique one again next. I’m sure it’s not as thick and icky when used correctly, right? Or perhaps try out the Emma Hardie one instead. Ooh decisions, decisions.

Have you tried cleansing balms before? Did you like them? How do you use yours to its fullest potential?

Thanks Tine for explaining cleansing balms, I have never used one before, but now I am a little bit curious and might see if I can buy a small jar to try. By the way your skin looks great and you have a very cute shower cap πŸ˜›

    1. Tine

It was my pleasure, Claire. I didn’t know how to use it either. Helps to have another beauty blogger explain to you without making you buy stuff πŸ˜‰

PS: Shower cap was from Woolies! πŸ˜€

  2. Hilary

Have you tried Liz Earle Hot Clothe Cleanse and Polish, Tine? I know its not available over here, but its SO worth having it shipped from the UK as its a lot cheaper than other brands, shipping is cheap and they so a couple of other HG products (from my pov) as well – the Superskin Concentrate is the *best* face oil I’ve found yet, and I’ve been through a few now!

If you email your address to me I’ll post you a sample size one to try as they always send you a small one when you order from them (I have quite a few stashed now!) and then you can see what you think, and maybe do a review post in the future (although not the reason for sending it to you, just trying to spread the love lol).

So sorry for the late reply! I haven’t checked my PO box yet but thank you so much in advance for the Liz Earle sample! Nope I haven’t tried it before but have heard very good things next to the Emma Hardie one. Woohoo something new to try! πŸ˜€

PS – ignore the address request, found it on the site here πŸ˜€ Will pop one in the post as soon as I can get to the post office πŸ™‚

Would love to hear your opinion on the Emma Hardie one! I’ve heard good things about it.

Will be getting a big tub from Feelunique to try out soon πŸ™‚

  5. Paris B

Yay! Happy to know you love them. I’m obsessed about cleansing balms, I swear. I find them more gentle on my slightly dry skin and definitely not as drying as a cleansing oil is. Also, as you mentioned the travel factor too! I do agree that Eve Lom leaves me skin feeling cleaner than Antipodes but over time, I actually find the Antipodes one is better for my skin. Good because it’s more affordable too! I will be replenishing that, but my next one to try is the famed Clinique. Will be interested to see how that goes!

Thanks so much for letting me try the Eve Lom! I wouldn’t have purchased it since I thought I wouldn’t like cleansing balms. But man, it is the bomb. Skin feels so soft after cleansing. Something I don’t get with most if not all cleansing oils. I’m warming up to the Antipodes one more and more, which is good. I’m still saving a lot of the Eve Lom one for special days πŸ˜›

I’m a cleansing oil fan but I still like cleansing balms n gels. I use it pretty much like I would a cleansing oil – massage onto face, rinse, then follow up with a facial cleanser. The muslin cloth thing sounds wonderful but like you said it’s more time consuming and can’t bring myself to deal with the extra minutes n laundry. I have the Ren glycolic mask so that’s when I use a muslin cloth and it does feel extra special and slightly more exfoliating.

Ahh this is when all those free face washers that are either GWPs or free gifts come in. I use one, chuck into the washing machine, then take another one out to use the next time. On lazy days, to be honest, I really couldn’t be bothered with the cleansing balm because it does take a lot more time and effort. I’d just use cleansing oils then. But when I do want to spend more time in the bathroom, that’s when I use the cleansing balms. Niccceeeee πŸ˜€

  7. Gemma

Completely unrelated to cleansing balms – I love your shower cap! So freaking cute! πŸ™‚

    1. Tine

Tee hee hee thanks! Less than a fiver from Woolworths πŸ˜› I don’t like boring caps. I have polka-dotted ones, floral ones, very grandma looking ones and I love them πŸ˜›

  8. plue

it’s a bit too troublesome so I’ll just stick to cleansing oil. don’t think I want boil water each time I want to use a cleansing balm, and at the moment i have no access to water heater either! >.<

and I mostly will not be very happy to do extra laundry given the horrible weather we have here these days! πŸ˜›

Yikes! That would be a lot of work to have to boil water to use hot water! >.<

Thanks for explaining the steps to your readers as I actually thought you need to wipe off the cleansing balm in circular motions instead of pressing the flannel/face cloth to your face. LOL. I really want to try this method and also try Clinique’s Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm as it was rated so highly by Caroline Hirons and Paula Begoun (this cleansing balm made it into her list of best cleansers) but I am just too lazy. Hahaha.Currently loving Bioderma Micellar Water (the pink bottle) very much as it has made my skin look clear but I will definitely give this method a try once my micellar water runs out πŸ™‚

    1. Tine

No worries! You do need to wipe it off in circular motions after you’ve pressed the face cloth on your face. The hot towel just warms up the balm on your skin first, kinda making it melt on your skin like cleansing oil and then massage it off your face. More work but the results are good πŸ™‚

  10. Anita

I’m a cleansing balm convert myself, my weapon of choice is the Lush Ultrabland! Once you figure out how to use them properly i’d say they are pretty much life changing.

Flannel face washers for life yo! πŸ˜›

How is it I’ve never tried a cleansing balm before??!! I am a creature of habit to a fault: if something works, I don’t change my routine around. The extra exfoliation you get on top of the cleansing sounds perfect – and how nice is it to pop a hot towel on your face! I need to try one – I want a life-changing product in my routine!

Hahaha I know! Me too! That extra bit of exfoliation with the face towel, especially a hot one, is AHHHmazing. You have to try it out!

  12. Anissa

The Audra James cleansing balm is amazing, you have to try it! It smells so much nicer than the Eve Lom one does.

    1. Tine

I’ve seen so many tweets going back and forth about Audra James and how good the products are. I didn’t know they have cleansing balms as well! Right, when I’m done with the Eve Lom, Antipodes and Lush, I’ll give that one a go. You got me at “much nicer than Eve Lom” πŸ˜›

      1. Anissa

Yay! You won’t regret it. The best thing is that Audra customises products for each person, so you’ll get something that you love. And if you want something special, she can usually make it for you. When I was pregnant she made me a morning sickness blend, it was brilliant.
