For The Love of Candles

Mrs Meyer's Clean Day Candle

So … candles. I think there’s a bit of a love-hate relationship with them. Oh, not me, I absolutely love them as you can tell. Some people love them, some people hate them. Some people love burning them, some people think it’s a waste of money. I guess it’s how you look at it and how it works for you really.

I didn’t actually start out loving candles. To me, candles were what my parents took out whenever there was a blackout at home. My brother and I weren’t allowed to go near them because according to Mum, “they’ll burn your fingers off and you’ll have no more fingers left!“. Yes, Mum can be bit dramatic (like mother, like daughter) but believe you me, it scared the crap out of my brother and I and we don’t touch them unless absolutely necessary. Plus you couldn’t get fancypants candles back then. The only coloured candles were the long slim ones that go on candelabras for romantic meals like what you see on TV.

Glasshouse, Circa Home and Illuminate

When I left home for the UK, I was astounded by the amount of gorgeous candles shops sell. No corny long, slim candles but big jars of coloured goodness. Still, I wasn’t sure if I was comfortable burning them in my room because 1) my fingers might burn off and 2) I might forget to extinguish them. That was when I discovered tealights.

Man, the amount of tealights and fragrance oils I went through in uni was crazy. I bought heaps of cheapie fragrance oils from £1 shops. I stopped using tealights and candles when I left UK for good and went home to Malaysia because they weren’t cheap then.

When I moved to Australia, I used to buy a lot of cheap Glade candles from Coles and Woolworths. It was during a crafts fair a few years ago that I learned what soy candles were and why they are much better for our health and home. When I learned how easy they were to make and how much each candle would actually cost (including utility bills to make them, etc), I was sold. I’d make my own soy candles and it was a lot more fun using what I made.

Glasshouse, Aldi, Circa Home and Dyptique

Limited edition Glasshouse in Night Before Christmas, a set of 4 snowflake candle votives from The Reject Shop, Circa Home in Oceanique and Dyptique in Roses (a gift from a very dear friend).

Having said that, I do buy readymade candles too. My absolute favourite ones are from Glasshouse. They come in gorgeous apocethary jars that can be reused to store facial cotton and cotton buds. Plus they make my dresser look so pretty. Over Christmas, I discovered a few more candles by Jaye Niemi, Mrs Meyer’s, Circa Home and the holy grail of candles simply because it costs an arm and a leg, Dyptique.

Why do I love candles so much? Easy. They exude warmth. They give the home a warm and cozy feeling. They get rid of fried fishy smells in a kitchen. They add a bit of *ahem* bowchikawowwow atmosphere in the boudoir. They add character and personality to a home especially when entertaining friends and family. I could say more but I think I’ve sold you the idea of candles well enough.

Do I feel like I’m burning money when I burn candles? Well, the way I see it, it’s like bowling. Every time I go bowling, I call it “throwing money down the drain“. But I absolutely love the game and am more than willing to go again. And again. A candle is something that gives me comfort and warmth at home, and for that, you can’t put a price on it. Plus there’s no need for expensive candles to give you that warmth for there are places that sell good quality soy candles that don’t cost you an arm and a leg.

That’s my story about my love for candles. What’s yours? Do you like them or think they’re a waste of money? No judgement here; I’d love to hear your thoughts. If you love them, what’s your favourite?

YAY TO CANDLES! BTW, just be a bit careful with candles on windy and total fire ban days. You’re still allowed to light candles indoors but I tend not to because I don’t want to risk it. I wish summer was over already and I can start lighting the heavier, headier scents like Tahaa 🙂

Nah, if it’s total fire ban, it means the day will be very hot. Too hot for me to light anything! 😛

I love candles! Love love love! Sadly I have not been using them as frequently and a bunch of them actually became a bit mouldy. I will definitely start collecting again when I move because my existing house resembles a store room now and I cannot be bothered burning candles.

I’m going to say the same thing I told Geek – you. me. Geek. May. Glasshouse. Sniff. That is all. 😀

i am not going to start on candles, but I know i have been looking at them like… forever! I bought my first one from L’occitane, the rose scent is lovely and it lingers for quite a bit, even when I am not burning it. The boy bought my a Yankee candle, rose scented too but I still haven’t touch it… yet.

I would love to own a Diptyque but man, it’s so expensive! I definitely will go for the rose scent!

It’s strange; I’m normally not a big fan of rose scents but the Dyptique one is simply gorgeous. I’ve not tried any by L’Occitane (didn’t even know they sell candles!). The soy candles on iHerb are pretty good if you’d like to get some for your home. 🙂

Love your comparison of candles to bowling! Perfect 🙂 Jeff & I always eat dinner by candlelight, the long skinny kind, that go with my decor. And a beautiful candelabra in the bedroom that I save for blackouts, lol. I also have some jarred candles that smell wonderful in the kitchen that I burn every now and then. But I hate that the jar turns black. Does that happen with soy candles in a jar?

Aww that’s so sweet and romantic! You have the long skinny kinds and a candelabra! 😀

The jars turn black when the wick starts smoking and it gets to the sides. It can happen when you turn candles upside down or hold it on its side to light a candle. It can happen to any candle. When you blow a candle out and the jar is still warm, just use a tissue or paper towel to wipe the black bits off. They’ll be very easy to remove.

I’m strongly in favor of candles and I burn them often. Aside from them smelling nice, I love the visual warmth they give off. I have an electric wax/oil warmer, but I rarely use it and instead go for one powered by tealights. I suppose it’s more expensive (you have to buy scented wax/oil AND the tealights), but it’s just so cozy.

I LOVE tealights. Like you said, it’s the visual effects. I get them from IKEA; they’re very cheap there. You can get fragrance oils cheaply too and you only need a few drops so a bottle of it can last you ages. Unless you’re using it in the bedroom, try not to burn essential oils often. They’re very good but it’s very wasteful and expensive. You’ll get the same effects with fragrance oils. Something I learned at, er, candle school 😛

I’ve wanted to make my own soy candles for the longest time but I can’t find soy flakes here in Malaysia! All they have is beeswax! hhmph!!!

I haven’t dabbled much into scented candles because of time factor, but you mentioned they do eliminate odors from cooking, so I might try some soon…

Try eBay? They have a wide selection.
Yeah I use candles to get rid of odours in the kitchen, especially after I’m made curry or fry a fish. 😛

By the way, what do you think of Mrs Meyers candles?

Love them. They burn very evenly and you get to reuse the jars. Win win in my books!

I love candles too, my faves are Ecoya, but I also love battery operated types for adding ambience to the bedroom, without worrying about falling asleep and burning the house down.

    1. Tine

I’ve been meaning to try Ecoya ones for ages! I’ve heard great things. I keep an electric burner in the bedroom too but the sucky thing about it is that it doesn’t have a cut-off point. If I forget to switch it off and leave it on all night, it continues heating and burns any remaining oil and leaves a burnt brown residue on it 🙁
